I'd love to run a Whippet as they would without doubt nail a fair few rabbits that my Saluki's would miss on short runs, however I could not be confident in running them even at the level I run my Salukis at now. I've yet have even well bred, intelligent running lurchers last more than 4/5 season's. Yet my first Saluki was still running 100% sound and strong at 10yrs old, 2 week before he died I'm expecting the same from my current 3.

I'd like to see them run dry clay sowings all day or night before making any judgment, I'm not knocking them. I've never seen one run to enough to know one way or another I just think their speed and style of running would finish them in a couple of season at best with my type of hunting (ie hunting woods day and night, ferreting and lamping rock strewn fields and hedgrows old fence wire eveywhere. Fields of dry clay like rubble.

Cracking dogs but they just don't shout durabiltiy to me. :)

Get a dog crossed up with something, collie maybee. A good cross will have more stamina than a straight dog, and like has been said, take the knocks a bit more.

If your going to do a lot of work with the dog on a good number of rabbits, on 'hard hilly ground', maybee consider a collie grey or something similar.

A slightly bigger stronger dog will towards the end of the day, fair a litte better after many hours covering the ground hunting. (maybee covering approx 20 miles + in a day, and running the bunny's as well.)

Hey JPT, having a whippet pup bought up with a terrier certainly teaches them not to be arse biters. I think my JRT has been invaluble in teaching my whip how to get to grips with game. By play fighting constantly the whip has become very tacktile and now knows the tricks of the trade. Had he been bought up with older dogs that dont want to play or on his own im sure he would be a very different dog, and that he would have to find out how to fight the hard way!!
