JordKil 0
How would I get my dog to get on with my ferrets when I tryed to introduce him to them while muzzled he sniffed them then just snapped at them. He'd be a great ferrreting dog as he has a great sense of smell and immense hearing so he'd easily hear a bunny come up for the bolt only problem being that my ferts could be his dinner How do I stop him doing this? (i dont want him getting hurt in anyway by the ferrets like letting them bite him to teach him a lesson as that would make him scared hes like that or it would wind him up even more) Thanks Jordan Quote Link to post

A gace is good a the dog can see the ferret but not harm it. Out of all our dogs (13) we only have one we canttrust with the ferrets. Shes a confirmed fetrret killer sadly so can never come on our ferreting trips Quote Link to post
Richie10 345
I have the opposite problem, my most trusted ferret wants to kill my pup! Quote Link to post
JordKil 0
oh dear now that must be a pain. By the way i got him used to them now he just ignores them and walks off. But he does guard them from other dogs if we're somewhere where there is dog walkers. Cheers Jordan Quote Link to post
doddsy1970 9
Try a saucer of kitten milk together. My dogs are always introduced to the ferrets when they are puppies. They get a few nips but they never come to any real harm. My lurcher stays away from a ferret but last year when i trapped a mink she wanted to rip it to pieces. Quote Link to post
8shot 192
with my springer i held him to the floor and let my ferret nip him on the nose...now he legs it when the ferret comes towards him Quote Link to post
JordKil 0
Cheers guys I just used a bottle of water with him and sprayed it in his face when he showed an 'unhealthy' interest. Also the fact hes shit scared of bottles of water helped a bit. He now will wait looking over the warren and when he hears something rumble or surface in the grass he tenses up and gets ready to go, but if its a ferret he stops and walks away and sits next to the box. its brill. Also there is a few dogs that try and attack the ferret or box (when im working the farm roads) and he charges them as if to say "My ferrets!" and will not let them anywhere near without my word. I could try the milk thing because the ferrets want to play with him sometimes and they do eventually chase him lol but he gets annoyed when they do and im worried he'll just snap. Cheers guys Jordan Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
I think dogs soon learn that the ferret is one of the team, bring them up in the same enviroment they get to know each other, then when the rabbits start moving there interest in the ferrets fade. The other tricks probably work well, but in time a sensible dog comes round to it anyway. Quote Link to post
anthonytomo 8
i was in the same situation as u so wat i done is get the ferret in its cage so the dog can see it an put it next to the dog an the dog ventualy got used to t and egnours it no [bANNED TEXT] there out ugether and they play together now Quote Link to post
jenksi87 3
ive got that problem aswell mate with my doing being a pup(5month) hes always giddy and excited (has the same temprement as my hob, a cheeky little twat that will nip u and run off) and gets the ferrets to chase him around the garden !! they have nipped him but he just whined and growled then had a run at them for another chase. i have no idea how to calm him down around them and dont want to let him out near them as i have seen my hob pop a bunnys eyeball with a bite and do not want this happening to my dog. i have a jill that just has a sniff at him but doesnt really bother. theproblem is when i put the male dog and male ferret together. i cant really tell the wether my hob is wanting to play or attacking the dog. the dog is always stood at the cage when hes out looking at the ferrets and when i am out with them he stands at the window watching and whining Quote Link to post
Ginette 0
I have to say if there was a saucer of milk between my dog and a ferret the ferret would die. Don't get me wrong my dog loves ferrets but is very territorial over food. You probably have to know your animal well to see what works, like the whole fear of water thing. If only we all had the luxury of introducing a pup to a kit! Quote Link to post
