SportingShooter 0
In a word No. You could spend the whole time trying to see the visible differences in the way that they shoot but unless you have an eye that can shoot a fly's eyebrows off, then you wont notice. The appearance and weight is the only difference. The American has a light barrel, the Varmint has a heavy barrel. The American's barrel is long and thin, the Varmint is short and fat. There is a Longer barreled Varmint model available too. It is the same as the 16" Varmint, only with a 21" barrel instead. Go and handle all of them, and see what you think. Shooting wise, they are no different. SS Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Which should I go for they are both similar price? Is there much deference in performance? NO, next to no difference in performance!! They are rim fires, and heavy barrels are not required for hunting...if you want a heavy barrel then fine, and some do, down to the individual but I see no point in lugging round an unnecessarily heavy rifle for hours...down to the individual!! Huffski 1
I have noticed the american seems to get the better wood stocks and the varmint are usually plainer but on the odd occasion the varmint you get a good stock i managed to get a good stock Quote Link to post

SportingShooter 0
I have a great stock on my Varmint HMR. Wood is superb for a rifle that cost what it did! Quote Link to post
