To all you seasoned shooters out there....

With the weather being like it is at the moment, what are your tips for keeping warm for an entire days shooting?

Can anyone recommend gear that has prevented on onset of hypothermia and frost bite?

There is a lot of stuff out there, fingers, toes and head are the important areas, if you can keep these warm the rest of you will be ok.

 

Most gear carries silly price tags, and all but arctic thermals will be pretty useless after a full day of frost and wind, I've had days when my eyes were almost frozen closed with the mist and freezing temperatures!

 

Keep moving if you can as well, often difficult when the ground is frozen and every step you take sounds like a thunderclap of breaking frost and ice and the quarry is tucked up warm somewhere else anyway!!

well a year or so ago i bought a norgie on the ex army stand at a game fair....£5 best £5 spent ever!! It tucks into your knickers (yes i have reached a certain age where i dont feel the need to show my navel to all and sundry) and with a layer or 2 on top its excellent. Thant and some neoprine lined wellies and musto w/proof and warm new type shooting gloves....perfect!

I swear by deerhunter ram trousers, waterproof, windproof, insulated and tough as f**k! They will keep you warm and dry in just about any weather you are likely to encounter while hunting in the uk. Its the windproofing thats needed, you can have numerous layers on but unless you have a windproof outer the wind will cut straight through them all. As for footwear my new meindl Lhotse boots are great, well worth the money, stand up to brambles and other tough undergrowth well.

Thermal underwear. It's the very finest ever. Long johns for me, although I need some more because the cat shat in my underwear drawer when I was away

I also want to get some Muck Boots as my wellies get cold and horrible pretty quick.

 

Has to be said though I run pretty warm, most of my colleagues either complained or gave up on the lunch run, and I was warm and toasty in a T-shirt with a coat on...

You want warmth, and wind/waterproof try Deerhunter Rusky, there not a walk about trouser in the sense you will overheat, they have superb insulation called Dexfil...So for something like pigeon shooting or ferreting they are ace...

EEEERRRRRRRR....actually it's the coldest part of the body, the nuts need to remain cooler than the rest of the body...that's why they hang around outside

My feet and fingers are the bits which get the coldest first and take the longest to warm up again

 

But.. At the risk of sounding like a seasoned Toff, I have a few new things which have been added to my Shooting cupboard.

 

I have a pair of Meindl Dovre Extremes there now and they are superb, not had cold feet yet, even when it was -3'C a few weeks back, no probs. I am on the look out for something like Le Chemeau wellies at some point, not just yet, but sometime.

 

I bought a pair of Musto leather gloves which have Gore-Tex lining the inside, ones to look out for

 

Someone bought me a handwarmer too, only used it twice, and I can't remember the name, not a Peacock one I know that, another one. I leave it in the pocket of my shooting coat all day, Ahhh Warm

Make sure you wear a wooly Hat or a Hood. That's where you lose most of your Body Heat!
