WHITEYrs4 29
Decided to set out and do a bit of ferreting yesterday with the dogs, we got to the vegetable fields, where we normally go ferreting only to find that the river had burst its banks and flooded most of the fields where the bunnys are! Absolutely gutted so We let the dogs off for a bit of exercise until we got near our next permission, as we got there my dog bolted a rabbit and chased it across the field and just missed it Climbed over the gate into the next field and we spotted a really big rabbit up the top of the field, both dogs spotted it aswell, before we could set one of the dogs off my mates dog had already started the chase! Anyway he missed it through the fence so we decided we werent having a very good day and decided to drive somewhere else where there were more rabbits! As we got there my mates dog started slowing up his pace of walking, as we got to the van I said to me mate he doesnt look to good and my mate replied saying naa he is just an hypochondriach As I was sorting my dog out I looked at his dog and he looked like he was drunk, I walked over to him patted him on his back and he collapsed! I immediately picked him up and all four of his legs spread wide opened he fell to the floor and started shaking violently like he was having a fit! I carried him into the back of the van he stood up in a locked position with his head down, he just wouldnt move at all and he started making very bad whimpering noises. As we were getting the gear in the van I quickly took a photo of his condition so that I could show the vet as we didnt think he was going to make it. He stood in this position for about 7 minutes totally not moving, we tried to get him to lie down because of the journey in the van to get to the vets then all of a sudden he just collapsed. I thought he was dead, we jumped into the van and he was still breathing, his eyes were wide open but there was no response from him. Here is a pic of him standing up in the locked position All the way to the vet he was in a limp position having muscle spasms me and my mate were scared sh*tless as we thought has he broke his back? or has he been poisoned? we just didnt know what to think. Anyway we got to the vets, the vet examined him and he wasnt too sure what he thought it was but his suspicion was either he had been poisoned or he had some scientific muscle disorder, he did say the name of it but I cant remember! Anyway he sent him off to another vet which is more specialised in this and they kept him in and put him on a drip and took blood tests! Then 7 oclock last night the vet phoned my mate and told him to come and pick up the dog he is jumping around here like a kangaroo! The vet said that the problem was that his blood sugar was dangerously low and that they had got his sugar level back up and he was right as rain as if nothing had happened So I thought I would share this with you so that you can recognise the symptoms in case you ever experience this for yourself! Heres 2 pics 10-15 mins before it happened hes the 1 with all the dark brown his name is diesel. Looks fit as a fiddle! Quote Link to post

Geoff.C 0
Similar symptoms can happen to gun dogs too, when having a busy day picking up. Several of the handlers in the picking up line, where my wife goes, swear by giving their dogs a couple of custard creams or a third of a mars bar at the lunch break. Whitey, I can't see any carpet or anything in the van for the dogs to lie on? Quote Link to post

Geoff you should not give dogs chocolate its toxic to them You are right Whitey, I should have said the middle bit of a mars bar, they usually suck the choc off before the dogs get it. Glad you have the comfort box in the van, I can see some of the sawdust in the picture. I just hate to see dogs in vans without even a bit of mat to grip on. Quote Link to post
