.17 HMR good for shooting foxes or not?

Recommended Posts

as above. will do the job easy at closer range up to 100 yards with head shot. but i would stick to around 80 yards.

if you want a foxing gun tho get a centrefire. more room for error. i wouldnt use hmr for a body shot on a fox like i would with centrefire ;)

Yes, HMR works on foxes, but no, I wouldn't recommend it. Put it in the right place and down they go, but there is zero margin for error.

I really dislike HMR for anything other than rabbits, I just find the tiny little bullets don't have great penetration and over about 100 yards don't have much shock power either.

I just wish 22 Hornet would be back in vogue, it's a terrific general purpose round but let down by the crap factory ammo (which hardly any RFDs stock)

mr logic still trying to peddle obsolete rounds......probably slightly better than a 22 semi auto.. :clapper::clapper::clapper: your worse than my grandad reminising about the good old days.....time to move on......hornet will never be back in vouge, the round is lacking in many ways.....

i think the hmr is spot on for foxs up to 200 yards they are greta but you dont have much room for error .223 or a .243 would be better though i am no expert though so one of the more experianced guys girls will give you all the info you need ;)

id say if you are an ok shot 17hmr is ok for fox...as with most shots on bigger game shot placement is important...you are fairly safe out to 100 yards as long as you are hitting in a decent kill area.....222/223/22-250/243 are better for longer range shots but hmr will do the trick..........
