woha 70yrds with a 12ftp rifle??!!! 1. it surly cant reach that far without aiming 2m above and 2. when it reached it it wouldent be powerfull enough to penetrate. that magpie you said droped. droped because of laughter! il give you the benifit of the doubt though. because thats awesom.

We are not talking .22 i was using .177 AA pellet in a 97k v-mach with a 6-24x50 scope, 2 metres above your having a laugh.

Not quite. A 15 grain pellet with a ballistic coefficient of .020, making <11ft/lbs at the muzzle (~570fps) will retain ~5ft/lbs at 50 yards. That would mean ~3ft/lbs at 70 yards.

Keeping the zero at 30 yards here's what we can expect from a <11ft/lbs rifle (under optimum conditions)

Yds |fps |FP |Drop |Sightline

1 |570.26 |10.83 |0.005 |-1.497

5 |553.17 |10.19 |0.137 |-0.597

10 |532.53 |9.45 |0.569 |+0.260

15 |512.65 |8.76 |1.331 |+0.788

30 |457.38 |6.97 |5.988 | 0.000

50 |392.84 |5.14 |19.516 |-8.369

55 |378.18 |4.76 |24.592 |-12.155

60 |364.07 |4.42 |30.485 |-16.759

65 |350.48 |4.09 |37.276 |-22.260

70 |337.40 |3.79 |45.053 |-28.747

So Yes, if aimed well, he can take a magpie at 70 yards. And you dont need to holdover 2m. 30" will do just fine.

I was referring to the daft speeds and therefore power mentioned in part above.

Speeds of 800-900-1600ft sec are not back yard plinking tools, a .22LR with shorts or caps or even shot shell can be UNDER 30ft lb and the noise from a sub sonic .22LR with a decent moderator is quieter than most PCP!!! The noisiest part of a standard 40g HP Soft lead .22LR at 1050 ft sec is a very satisfying thud upon arrival.

Very True. And Enticing ;) But I still feel that air rifles are much more fun! The satisfying thud you mentioned is indeed very satisfying. But somehow its built into the back of my head that I need to keep the LR for long distance purposes. Sort of makes its cooler having a tool for each range :gunsmilie:

What program or website did you use Mohamed for the calculations.

Hey RAMCAM, its a software called AirGun. I downloaded it a long time ago from some website. Can't remember which.

If you cant find it online, send me the data and I'll do the calculations for you.

If you can get the known velocity with a particular brand of pellet, the software will give me the correct data for other types of pellets using your original data.

After playing around with a lot of pellets and power settings I found this to be the best setting for accuracy with maximum power.

But you're perfectly right, 800-900fps is usually the best bet for power with accuracy.

I haven't tried the Piledrivers. They're not available here. Though it weighs 30 grains, I feel it wont be accurate at supersonic velocities. I dont know for sure though.

The Prometheus brand is interesting though. That guy does a lot of continual research and improves his products all the time. I believe he came up with a much better option after Piledrivers. Dont remember the name. They come in 3 head sizes for each calibre so that you get the perfect fit for your barrel.

Hi Mohammed

i think the prometheus pellets you are thinking of are either defiants or dynamics, the defiants come in three head sizes as you say and should cost about £12.00 for a box of 1000, the dynamics come in different types depending on whether you use a spring or PCP airgun and are a fair bit more than the average .177 pellet at a cost of £14.00ish for a box of 500, interestingly i have seen a note up at the range i use asking that anyone who shoots with the dynamic pellets should restrict their shooting to the larger metal plinking targets as the pellet will damage the smaller metal targets due to the pellets energy transfer upon impact, i have used the dynamics and they group well at 30yds but have yet to try the defiants as the shops i have tried have had no stock, however they are available from uttings mail order so will give them a go sometime

What signals are we sending out here? Are we really saying that it's alright to be aiming at live quarry 70 yards away with a 12ft/lb air rifle, ffs get real! :wallbash:

You can produce all the facts and figures you want but it seems like you've sacrificed good old common sense. :hmm:

Hi Fin and Fur,

Thanks mate, they're the Defiants..

Haven't heard of the Dynamics though. But the note at the range is interesting. It must have some real good energy upon impact or its a very good ad idea! How was the impact when u tried em? I've heard defiants are really great. Get the trial pack with all the three head sizes so that you can find the perfect fit.

I'm sorry you felt that way Tote. No signals being sent. The table was given only as an indication of power carried at those distances when all else is constant. Its never alright to shoot at live quarry at those distances. It would be better and less cruel to beat it to death! lol..

I just wanted to point out that we cannot jeer at somebody for a claim, when we're not sure of the facts.

THIS SHOT WAS ONLY ATTEMPTED ONCE AND IT WAS A ONE SHOT KILL WOULD NOT TRY ON PIGEONS I WAS USING A .177, I DID NOT NEED MUCH HOLD OVER AT ALL ONLY ABOUT ONE INCH ABOVE THE HEAD IMPACT WAS IN THE NECK.

MOHAMED WAS MEARLY STATING A FACT. :drink:

Hi Mohammed

i didnt have the chance to go down range to examine the pellets after firing as people were still using the range at the time, however i gather that these pellets suffer less deformation on impact of the target and as such retain most of their energy, i guess this must be the same for most of the 'air bullet' profile pellets defiants, dynamics, penetrators et al, i am ordering up some of the defiants from uttings.com as i cannot seem to find a shop that sells them, plenty of places stock the dynamics but the defiants seem scarce on the shop shelves, will let you know how i get on with the defiants when they arrive, i have initally gone for the 4.52's as this diameter seems to work well with my weihrauch when using JSB Exacts etc

i use bisley magnums,my rapid is doing 1180 ftper sec and can get decent groups at 70 yrds.i have plenty confidence at that range anyway, has a 22 inch barrel though

.177 OR .22???

What is the sonic boom like????

What ft/lb was the gun producing Ramcam?
