O/U vs SEMI For Game/clay

Recommended Posts

Pretty sure its illegal to use semi autos for game, be worth looking into it befor you buy.

I think not, what makes you think this...there are some (many) shoots where they are frowned on, but nothing illegal...you can perfectly legally shoot a game bird with a rifle if you want as well!!

Im a keeper on a grouse moor and carry a gun in the line when there;s to many birds left at the end of the season. i used to carry my auto untill two different knowledgable head keepers told me this.

You can only shoot game with a rifle if you have it down on your cetificate.

You can only shoot whatever it says on your FAC, but there is nothing illegal about shooting a game bird with a rifle or semi auto shotgun or in many cases an air rifle either, ..it may not be acceptable, it may be frowned on and it may not be recommended, and your keepers may not like it, but ask them to show you the legislation..!!!

Deker is spot on with this

Chap...I think you need to look yourself...this makes it clear that it is perfectly LEGAL to shot game Birds and EVERYTHING else with a semi auto shotgun, there are some restrictions on section 1 shotguns but these come under a FAC not SGC...

You cannot buy a section 1 without good reason and without a FAC, a SGC holder cannot simply buy one, they are NOT available under a SGC, there are VERY few left in the UK thanks to Michael Ryan, but yep...if you were walking around with a section 1 semi auto you can't shoot game birds with them apparently...

So 100% of Semi Auto SGC holders can carry on using them on game birds, and 99.9999999% (approximately) of all Semi Auto shotgun owners can carry on using them!!

ATB!!

yes boys im glad you confirmed that and if shoots came into the 21st century you would see more semi autos on game shoots as i have seen more incidents with silly old fools with bad fitting bad maintained side by sides and old fashioned arrogance than i care to remember and most of the shooters coming here from abroad bring semi autos with them and you dont see the large commercial shoots turning them away from there 300 bird days i dont know if anyone remembers the article in shooting times when bennelli released there new 20b s/a at gleneagles last year good enough for them

You will probably end up buying more guns anyway, thats just the way it is! To start with I would advise the o/u as it is far easier to clean and generally more reliable that semis which can need a lot of cleaning and depending upon the makes don't always like the lighter cartridges that some clay grounds may require you to shoot.

Good luck.....go with your gut instinct.

hiho just confirmed to me you've never used a auto! I know your only a young lad don't want to slag you off but a auto is alot faster to reload. ;)

it is legal to shoot game with a auto, its only the safety aspect people are worried about.

Iv used a pump action and that was a pile of wank to load.. i fought semi`s and pump actions you load the same
