Blake 2
Are the blacks harder due to the ammount of staffordshire bull terrier in them ?? A lot of the blacks on this forum look like slim staffys!!! cos all the owners of fells, patts etc have small cocks and need something to make up for it!! i'm bollixed altogether,i've a russel and a small cock You think that's bad - I've got a russel and NO cock Quote Link to post
smasher 1,055
Personaly im a big fan of russell, ive always kept and worked them with good sucsess,Ive also kept blacks and still do,Blacks tend to be easier to enter however, and will want to go a lot sooner which some think is great, may be because they have no patiece or big egos.easily entered and easily ruined by those with with little experience or people that should know better,All breeds will work equally well if they are given the opertunity and the breeding is kept right,WORK FIRST ,LOOKS A BONUS,unfortunatly the latter seems to be more important to some Quote Link to post

I've had some Russells start at about a year. A couple of my good ones didn't start until they were nearly two. I'm willing to wait on one to be ready at two, but it had better be showing me good signs that it's interested. Quote Link to post
Rainmaker 7
There's still some cracking white dogs about. Here's the pair from my avatar; they belong(ed) to a mate and I had the pleasure of digging them out of some really hard places many a time over. The smooth bitch (who did have some bull in her) was a right hard nut, totally mute. She took any and every quarry you could expect (and some you couldn't lol), and always found if one was home. She passed after a hard outing a couple of seasons ago now, aged 9-10. I still miss working with her The white lakey looking bitch is a straight yapper, but a pleasure to dig to. She's one of those dogs you can take out twice a day every day if you wanted, and she not only always finds where others have missed, but she very (very) rarely gets marked up. Canny little thing she is. Last I heard she was on loan to a hunt near Cannock and giving the foxes hell in and around Weston Park I won't name the fella who has her as last I checked he'd not really made it as far as the forums etc. Anyway here they are... gnipper 6,467
The one on the lefts dead now mate, last I heard he was bottle feeding her pups. She must have died while whelping or something. Quote Link to post
Rainmaker 7
'kin hell, I didn't know that She was a belting little bitch, Nelly. Did she go back to H then, or was she still down south near Cannock? I'm presuming he had her back if you heard about her dying. Bummer either way. Quote Link to post
woodard 32
most of the good looking russels look like they have a bit of lakeland or patt some where in there lines to breed them up abit getting more leggy and boxed heads Quote Link to post

I dunno where she was mate, he lives across the road from 'Her' brother who told me he'd seen H feeding some pups in the front garden and Shorty said it was her that had died. Quote Link to post

The bitch on the right was a cracker, I don't think he dug many live foxes with her either. Another bitch he had that was about the same age as her but more of a white lakey type and a good bitch too, there was a lad from up cumbria way offered him silly money for her every time he bumped into him at shows but I think that was more for her looks than ability. This is nice for me to read. I've got two girls here that just got their first taste of fur in the ground a couple of weeks ago. They are full sisters, different litters. One is three years old and the other is about 18 months. The three year old...well....I haven't held her back for this long, but we've just had rotten timing when we get out with her....hasn't been anything home. The 18 month old.....I didn't think she was mentally "there" until about 14 months to even take her out in the field. Their first experiences didn't wow me...I wasn't exactly excited about it, but they both showed quite a bit of improvement in the short time we were there. Just hoping for some weather here at home to get things in the ground and get them out again. I'm just not all that gung-ho to want to have my dogs tearing shit up before a year old.....I'm good with waiting a bit until they've got some brains and then having them last for a good while. It's nice that I've got friends/mentors that aren't all that into pushing a dog, either. Jus' gotta love them folks! Quote Link to post
Rainmaker 7
There was some Gould in them Stig, but they weren't directly from him. I took that pic at Astley & Tilsley a few years ago. It did appear on here and Moocher's once, with the owner's permission (at the time I took it) but not apart from that. The dogs did see plenty of shows over the summers, and won more than their fair share. I'd say I dunno why, cos the big one was (in her way) ugly as feck She was a nice looking bitch alright, just not your average 'Russell' looking one Then again, she had 9 solid years of work experience etched into her features (or rather what was left lol) and I daresay that helped. I only ever saw one or two judges NOT impressed by the bitch, and they invariably were the ones placing granny Russells over the working types. I don't care what colour they come in, but when they work like those two did I'd give my right arm for them lol Sad to know they're both dead now, but their pups are well placed with some fairly well known names and Hunts, so their blood lives on Quote Link to post
