GIVE A DOG A GOOD HOME < STOP THE PASSING ABOUT >

i honestly think that alot of people breed to much crap , or is it crap or just how people

bring there dogs on, its a shame when people buy or breed a litter of pups and then do

nothing with them , ( retrieving , jumping even lead walking ) they just leave them in the

kennels and then take them out hunting at 7 mths and expect the dog to be a world beater ,

and when it dont shine its sold for a better dog ( its just had more time spent with it )

thats not even as well breed as the 1 thats just been sold.

ive had many dogs in my time and ive had some good dogs my best bitch was stolen and my

best dog was let out and knocked down and died on the way to the vets

(broke my heart and my kids). my bitch was 1 of the best lamping bitchs ive ever seen ,

could do 50 rabbits a night every night of the week

(use 2 do it all the time and also kill day time hares) she was in my eyes and people that

saw her run a top bitch on the land we ran. my dog was a dog that could do the same as my

bitch day time and night but he would take all quarry . what im getting at here is i had

these dogs at different times and neva took a pup out of any of them as i didnt feel the

need i needed another dog as i had every thing with what i was running at that time . my

only trouble when they had gone i couldnt get back to the breeding they came from as the

parents to both my dog where dead and could neva find any off spring as who i had got them

from as pups had breed for there own use and close people, so its time to move on and

concentrate on anoth pup that i will think will make the grade im looking for

( and i think ive found 2 (bitch and a dog) so i will put every bit of effort into them ),

i dont agree in breeding not unless im happy with them and proved them selfs worthy , but

what i will say is that if im happy with the bitch after 3 seasons i will take a litter ,

but the pups would be given( not sold ) to close friends so i can get back to the breed if

needed.

so the conclusion to this is THINK about what your breeding and WHY you need to breed ? if

your looking for a pup to run try get 1 from some dogs you have seen run and that your

happy with and then spend time with the pup and have patiance

( you only get out what you put in ! )

A fair post, and alot are dogs are under 12months old :o , ok you do get some that will never make it, :( but it will take most , two seasons to know the crack.??? you will know by then, at least you have have give it a fair chance. With breeding, you have to go with proven stuff , and you might get

a good pup for your self. ;)

i ant going to beat about the bush with you woody , i know you like your terriers realy hard , but the dogs your on about did they still do the job ? finding ! baying ! if so they still did there job !

remember antonys PENNY ( dandi dinmont looking russel ) you would neva give it space to look at and would neva breed from it but it was antonys bitch and you and him persisited with the bitch and in the end it came throught shining as a finder of a fox ( not hard ), how many dogs that where breed right did she show up LOADS mate . blood sweat and hard work did it mate because of how you 2 brought her on!

its in all hunting dogs to do a job , which part of hunting is all about what your happy with ! thats why i said if you buy or breed a dog make sure its out of what you think you will be happy with !

getting a dog that is perfect is once a life time . its up to us who bring the best out of what we think we will be happy with.

i rest my case mate

stop breeding wankers and take more care in what you want your self ! :D

Very good post, I can't believe that the dogs that pass through so many hands will work well for people. I think it takes a great bond for the dog and human thing to work! i got a lurcher pup three years ago. His dad was January Jack and the mum was a deerhound/greyhound. The guy wanted two more pups. When I collected my pup he and 9 litter mates had never been out the three sheds at the back of the garden. they were 6mth old and hadn't seen the outside world. That is unacceptable!!! They had not even had a collar on, didn't have names :( The dog was a great dog, so loyal, would do anything I asked him as he trusted my 100% was so obedient but did have some issues of being terrified of odd things like feathers, dead birds, some times he was too scared to go for a walk even. Ever day found a different dog, a jekyl and hyde. One day he was confident and happy next day he was cowed and terrified  I leanred a lot from this dog, the main thing being how much humans can really mess them up  I now have a 7mts pup that I collectd at 9weeks, he is bomb proof and the happiest dog in the world!

i do believe that some dogs are going to be better working dogs then others, I also believe there are the odd ones that wont make the grade at all, but what I do believe is if you put the time and effort into your dog you will get a dog that will go to the end of the world for you :clapper: I don't work my dogs but I have seen my reject rescues dogs blossom and I have then seen them, without any encourgement doing what comes naturally to them, if the previous owners had taken more time they may have had a good working partner

p.s I speak of the dog in the past tense now because I lost him 6mths ago in a running accident and not a day goes by that I don't think of him, I think every dog deserves that atleast,

say for instance you wanted a dog to match on the fens ,or kill hares on large fields regular you wouldnt go buy a pup from a dog that works rabbits in the dales ,or you wanted a terrier that was going to work rock piles you wouldnt buy from terriers that where hard to span, you would look for some thing that was suited and even better if you have seen the parents work and you was happy with them .every body has different levels of satisfaction, and what 1 man is happy with another dont like !. then when you have your pup as i said most dont get any work put into them as pups (its breed out of a world beater and it will be a world beater)not always the case we have to put work in to get it out .

all im try to get is THINK about where and what your running and pick you dog wizely and put in the hard work to bring your pup on , if your dog isnt a world beater in your eyes then i wouldnt breed from it, and maybe the man selling the pups he has breed should be choosy who he lets have his pups ? he maybe sentencing his breed to years of passing about !

Well said jackard.

My uncle used to get dogs from the pound, spend time training them and use them for working, and fine dogs they were. Most lurchers/greys/whippets with a prey drive are good workers, its just down to the owner to mould them and bring out their full potential. Its not as if lurchers are even what I would call 'hard' dogs. Its not just a lurcher problem though, why do we see so many Labs, Rotties etc. in pounds and rescues? Cos people don't bother to put time into raising and training them properly and just give up when they don't turn out right.
