JordKil 0
Iv been looking for a lurcher for a while now and iv had no joy, but I recently found whippet pups in the paper that are KC reg. I know that whippets are good rabbit dogs but are they as good as for example a beddie/whippet? Are they worth having? Thanks Jordan Quote Link to post

smudge1901 1
If your after a bit of lamping or day time bunnies, they are great... Very quick off the mark and you know what your getting. Unless you have proof of the mating you could be buying a right heinz 57 lurcher, which could have little pace. The question is, do you need the benefits of having a lurcher, ie collie for intelligence, beddlington for coat and stamina, or are you after just pace... My laguna bred dog is great on the bunnies and loves lamping, but tires more quickly than a WELL BRED lurcher, but he suits my needs. Very heavy prey drive and too hard mouthed, but i can live with this... Quote Link to post
luke 2
you wont go wrong with a well bred whippet mate Quote Link to post

Brimmer 220
Quick dogs, and fun to watch running. The crosses will give more stamina, and take the knocks better if you need a heavier workload to be taken on. Quote Link to post
shamus 36
i run a whippet(as wellas lurchers and deerhounds) and she is a fantastic little dog.As has been said they don't have the stamina of a good lurcher and mine is a bit reckless and seems to think she is about the size of a wolf. They are spectacular little coursers but mine does'nt know when to give up on bigger stuff and needs to be restrained at times.she is a great dog with the ferrets as well.Downside is her ears seem to be for decoration only and she will open up sometimes.I would'nt have only whippets but i would'nt be without one either. Guest greengrass123
IF YOU GET A WHIPPET LOOK FOR ONE THAT WILL BREAK THE 30LBS MARK CANT FAULT THEM, GO LIKE SHIT OFF A STICK. Quote Link to post
JordKil 0
Thanks for all the feedback The only problem I see is a wee weak whippet pup being bashed aroundby my collie who is very boistorous and strong (hes done some damage to my girlfriends GSD/husky n hes a strong pup) Also when lamping at night wouldnt they get pretty cold in autumn/winter months? Thanks Jordan Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
How does the collie shape up in the lamp? (on it's own that is! ) Don't write that dog off for the job! Quote Link to post
JordKil 0
He's very very keen but doesnt use his full potential (he goes after a ball a good bit faster than rabbit) no idea why you even say "Harry where's the rabbits!" and he goes nuts running back and forth to the door or if he's out he'll take off after them faster than a lurcher that he's mates with. He even jumps 4 - 5 foot high barb wire fences after them lol. Hes only killed a couple as he never seems to put in that last burst of speed after them. Uses his nose more though. He tracks everything which is great when just out for a walk or if my mates springers go wanders he'll track them down (sometimes drag them back kicking and screaming lol) Jordan Quote Link to post

minion 29
I think that the whippet is very underestimated. My older bitch is nearly two and she has plenty of stamina. She is 25 Lbs and 20" and she will work away on the coldest of nights with no probs. I genuinly can't see a benifit of crossing a whippet with a beddy. Appart from looks what's the advantages? To me the whippet is a sporting dog. Buy one and you get lots of sport and a dog that will give it's all every run. You also have the option of racing it in the summer which is great fun and can enter lure coursing events if you don't mind travelling a bit. Quote Link to post
