i was having trouble with my young lurcher with retrieving.i had a look at labsnlurchers post on retrieving and i gave it ago tonight,well what can i say after 10 mins i could not believe everything she said worked i walked into my house with massive smile on my face.so a big thanks to labsnlurcher she knows what shes on with.

what was the advice you recieved for retreiving cause im having trouble as well with it?

Retrieving:

get the dog on a longline and find an alleyway type area to work on the retrieve, the dog cant run round and round you then. Make sure you choose a time when the dog wont be distracted by cats/ kids / other dogs etc and also not at dinner time, this way you will have the pups full attention. Use a gundog training dummy as its a similar weight to the quarry, cover it in a rabbit skin if you can but this is not absolutely necessary. Start the retrieve close and to encourage the retrieve apply gentle pressure via the longline. When the dog gets to you put a hand on the dummy and say dead so the dog knows you got it, (if it were a rabbit and you didnt have it to hand it may run off!) Use the same single word every time so the pup knows that it means you have the dummy/quarry Reward with a pat and 'good dog' Keep the praise simple and calm so the dog doesnt lose its concentration maybe use a small treat too. Only do it 2/3 times because if you overdo it then the pup will get bored and you will undo any work done. Gradually increase the distance and then eventually the longline can go too but when you first remove the longline go back to shorter retrieves, if theres any problems then you are close enough to remind the pup that it has to return to you for the treat and praise.
