Guest Stevie D
That's not acceptable behaviour Dazzy, the pup is behaving as an Alpha male and this could lead to more serious behaviour. Does he let you near his food at feeding time? I suspect he might do the same thing. You need to let him know that the food/bone is yours and you are allowing him to eat. Hold a bone in your hand and let him have a chew, then push him off the bone and make him wait. Keep doing this until he shows no agression whatsoever when you take the bone back. Agressive behaviour - no bone/ no food. Don't do this with the kids around, just you to start with and see how it goes. Remember, it's YOUR bone not his. Good luck. Kye 77
All my dogs will lte me take food away from them,..even bones/flesh etc,.. Me the wife and FR where hunting in AZ not long back...my Stag bitch (31" and odd pounds) had a bone or summat, and i put my hand near her, and she made a little grumble...to say i gave that dog a hideing was an understament...if you had been five yards away, you wouldnt even have heard it!...i gave her the bone back, and then went to take it away, and she just let me have it with a sorry look on her face...i praised her up, and let her have it back and that was the last i ever heard of it!... I dont mind a dog growling at me when i take its food/bone,...but it only happens ONCE...if it happens, i sort them out, if it happens again, i sort them out even more...if it happens again after that they get Culled. Kye,..

Agree with KYE In my very humble opinion there are 2 types of terrier. 1 is the perky intelligent type who dont want any hassle. 2 is the hard nosed little b*****d with a grumpy attitude. I have both, the hard nosed barstards only understand one way, the fecking hard way. He growled at my kids ONCE, worst mistake of his life, he copped a large portion and since then hes like a lamb with the kids. Having said all that, I still cant pull the little fecker off a kill right away Do remember that dogs are pack animals and in the wild they get a good kicking if they step out of line. I do not apply the same rules with my lurcher, I think a slap would do much more harm than good. All the best, JOEB
Vermin Dropper 2
Having said all of the above...... and I do agree with the harsh line when it needs to be taken...... you must remember that a growl is a warning before the bite, if you beat the living daylights out of a dog for growling you could be setting yourself up for an attack without warning!!! This you can obviously do without, especially with the kids around. Stevie D hit the nail on the head, you must establish youself as the alpha male, then your wife and kids, then the dog. First try his advise with a toy he likes but is not quite so possesive over, then gradually move on to taking food/bones ect. A good trick for establishing dominance is moving the dog out of his/her bed and standing in it for a while, then let the dog back in it, just letting them know that your the boss and if you want it you get it! as well as this for generally establishing dominance, make sure you ignore the dog when you first get up, or get home. Take a good 10-20 minutes greeting and chatting to your wife and kids, totally blanking the dog... then after your family has had your attention fuss the dog.... They're not stupid, they see all this happening and understand it which re-enforces its position in the pack. I dare say you will get all manner of advise from the comical to the stupid to the down right cruel, just take care choosing the right path to take. Best of luck mate, keep us posted on your progress, Ps Dazzy, Are you a blue nose?
