LDR 29
Alright mate i cant tell you much more than what i said in the PM, but if you look at bruces dew claw now, they are more like little stumps than the nail, but he ripped them bad when he did it, i was looking for a huge gash the amount of blood there was, you'll know how sensitive your fingers are if you cut your nails too short, but after a few days they de-sensitise (spelling)....not sure if its the same for dogs though mate!!!! sorel-2007 0
I had a dog do that about ten twelve years ago. Took him to the vets and they bandaged it up and it drove him mad. Took them off bathed it in salt water and he did the rest. Was VERY painful for him though so only exercised him with road work so as to avoid him catching it on anything. Best of luck. skycat 6,174
Wash daily with salt water: don't bandage: let the air get to it as that will help to dry it up. Lead walk only until the quick has shrunk back and is covered with new nail growth: usually takes about 3-4 weeks. Quote Link to post
labsnlurchers 39
Try cornea cresin, black tar like ointment used on horses to encourage hoof growth. Quote Link to post
weejohn 3
nothing really to worry about my dog has bust 4 of his toe nails 3 at the back and 1 at the front, the 1 at the front was the only 1 that bothered him and he really didnt like walking on it for about 4/5 days, i just road walked him and bathed it in savlon. that method has worked for me.i left him as long as it took to completely grow back.. Garypco 3
losing a whole toe nail is one of the best injuries...keep it clean and dry...it wont take long the worse ones are when the dog shatters the nail...you do two things wait months for it to heal or completely cut the quick and nail clean off!!!its horrible having to hurt your dog that much....i once had to take my mates lurcher to the vet to stitched as hed come a cropper in that cropper he also smashed about 5-6 toenails we had to pin him while the vet cut each nail completely off ive seen dogs stitched cope better than that...but two weeks later he was out hunting as usual!!! it was an old school vet and long dead now but he was def the hunting mans vet as he always showed us and kinda taught us well! i dont know how many other vets wud trim a dogs nail that low now it wud prob have to be sedated!!! victor 10
id keep it clean forabout a week and if it doesnt look any better take her to the vets, it will cost you for anti biotics and all, but hey better than cutting her foot of . my dog fell of the back of the ute whilst tied to it. he was draged for a bit untill his collar snaped, thank god for that as he would have been hung, his toe nails were bleeding badly so when we got home i dryed his feet cleaned them up and thay were bleeding a bit still . so i put corn flower on it and he is fine now. good luck Quote Link to post
hunter-girl 10
My dog did the exact same thing only a couple of months ago.......cut it right off, it will hert the dog and bleed a little but cut it and cover it with some wound powder, after that bath it 3 times a day in detol and hot water - have the water as hot as the dog can put his foot in with 2 cap fulls of detol, soak the foot for 20 mins at a time. The nail will soon start to grow back. By leaving the quick exposed you are exposing it to infection - if you have any antibiotics at home, even if they are your own give the dog 1 a day for 10 days and keep to dry road work on a lead and walking only for about 2 - 3 weeks, depending on the dog.....i know that is hard this time of year!!!! good luck with it Quote Link to post
whip x grey 276
had a dog did that this year back toe nail,,took him to vets as he did it in race so toe was dirty,,,and needed cleaned up,,,,most pll,s said 4 to 6 weeks,,,,,but it was 12 weeks before he raced again,,, (i,e new toe nail was,nt hard enough ) so be pepared for it taking longer before dogs ready,,,( try to keep it clean as much as possible for the 1st few weeks ) hot salt water works best Edited November 19, 2008 by whip x grey Quote Link to post
