squirrel nutkin 0
Hi I have just re-entered the world of airgunning and have recently purchased a 2nd hand BSA Lightning XL, which was recommended and turns out to be an excellent rifle. However, on reading a number of threads on Theoban Gas Rams I have become intrigued with the idea od converting my springer to a gas ram. Could someone offer me some advice with reegard to this upgrade and where, if anywhere, in the Basingstoke/Newbury area I might find a willing and competant ginsmit to complete the job for me? killa-combo 142
av heard if ya put a 177 ram in a 22 it powers over the legal limit or a 22 in a 177 carnt remember... Quote Link to post
squirrel nutkin 0
Yup I have heard the same. it's when you put a 0177 into a .22 that it takes it over the legeal limit and therefore requires you to have a FAC. I fortunately have one for a .308 and would only need to add the new rifle to the list. Still need to know how to convert or insert the ram properly. Quote Link to post
AKeeNShoT 5
mate, dont bother doing it yourself, because its not easy at all, one problem is taking the maxigrip scope mount off and putting it back on, you need to alter the internals beyond return to fit the ram in, thing is, if you do it and dont like or you do it and you lose 1.5-2ftlbs (i've heard of three doing that, 2 of which were fitted at a gun smiths) then you cant just whack the spring back in, cos ya've butchered the guides and hat and some other stuff, not sure about other guns, but theobens ram in a lightning/tactical xl is a big job, so much so that some gun smiths wont even do it, hope this helps, and hey if you do it and and its successful, you'll love it, i often put mine down and pick my mates up, its lovely to shoot ps a gunsmith will not fit a .177 ram into a .22 chamber, A) because its good practice not too, if it goes wrong you're not covered for anything. so you'll probably have to do it yourself anyhow. isn't suggesting how to modify your guns over legal limits illegal on a public forum???? Big bald beautiful 1,231
put a .177 ram in a .22 and it will be over the limit and will f**k your gun up, seen it done several times.the stock screws work loose and even seen the stock split the lightning kicks like a mule with out adding more power, there built to run under 12 ftlbs. Just get an HW90 and be done with it! Sorted from the start, and no need to worry about 'will my gun still work ok?'. I've had mine for ten years and it's the best air gun I've ever used. Simple and totaly dependable. Try to give one a go and see what you think. Good luck and happy shooting!! Edited November 30, 2008 by andyfr1968 Quote Link to post
