Tommy 9
Having read through the Minshaw topic and seen that many people have some great tales to tell from the past, thought that now the season is over it would be a good time to talk of some of the great times from the past, I'M sure plenty of you fella's have some days to tell of?????? Well i'll start with a day out i had coursing in the 2003/2004 season. For the past 6 seasons i have run with an oldish bloke from the same village as me and due to work commitments he only has the weekends free, so our coursing together was done on either saturday, sunday or if we were mad for some dog work Both !!!! Now in late febuary 2004 i had an invite to go coursing with a bloke not far from me who is well into the coursing game and of course i accepted !!! Me and another mate arranged to meet at his house at 9.00 am and then traveller to were we'd be coursing, on arival to his house i notiched his car not been there and a quick phone call and he explained that he thought we'd be meeting him at the land and he was there waiting for us !! After much Headscratching we finally found the land at about 10.00am and quickly got sorted for the days coursing. After a bad start to the day i was expecting more things to go wrong but on the coursing side of things we had a great day !!!! The first run of the went to my mate who i had gone with and i was really impressed with how his dog ran. The dog he was running that day was a Bedlington x Greythound x Deerhound x Greyhound and was about 13 months old. It was a stroke of luck that he got the dog as an old lad on the alloments were he keeps his Pigeons had the dog and was looking for a home for it, the down side been that the dog hadn't seen anything other than a few rats !!!!!!! Well when he slipped his dog he told me after that his Heart was in his mouth but the dog soon took of the pressure as it performed really well putting the hare under a lot of pressure before it escaped into a dense wood/spinney. After this this the coursing that happened was great to watch, the highlight been watching two 11 month old Saluki cross pups tightly coursing and then pulling down there hare, a great start to there coursing career !!! There was four of us out that day and i was the last to get a run, but finally a hare jumpted to the side of me (about 50 yards away) and i slipped my bitch. She got to her hare and coursed it really well (pressure of as it's always nice when your dogs perform when others are watching), but the hare was trying to get to a small spinney. My bitch is usually good around cover and she tried her best to keep the hare out but he managed to get in and she lost him as he doubled back out of the wood !!! My next slip came only about 10 mins later when a hare jumpted on some plough about yards away, she was soon on top of the hare and took it onto some seed. As she got onto the seed i could see a pup of my mates coming to join in on the course and just hoped that my bitch would end the course before the pup got there. This she did and the pup was given a sniff of the hare !!! My third run came when the lads were walking a rough grass field and a hare tried to sneak out of the back off them, but i spied it and slipped when the hare was about 50 yards away. The hare was heading for the wood that my bitch lost her first in, but it wasn't a top grader and she soon put an end to his attempt of escaping. I was well happy with her performance by now (2 from 3) and there was still loads of land to go at. The other lads were still getting plenty of runs and the bloke who invited me had a great run with a small brindled dog he had !! After a break of about 15 mins i spied a hare squat down and decided to try and get a run for my bitch, but the downside was that the hare was only about 200 yards away from a large wood !! Trying to get to the wood side of the hare i slipped at about yards and this time the hare was a good one. He tried a few tricks to through my bitch but she stuck with it and after a couple of mins of coursing he made a great move to get near the wood !! It worked and he looked to be home and dry, but i was over the moon when my bitch came back out of the wood carrying her hare !!! I didn't think the day could get any better !!! After this i watched a great course which resulted in my mates Bedlington Lurcher catching its first Single Handed Hare !!! Great Stuff !!!!!!! We then decided to walk back to the van and call it a day and after a couple of the lads had had a fag we set of for the motors. We were about a 100 yards from the vans when my mate said he had seen a hare squat in the middle of a massive field !!! I asked the lads if they wanted to run it but they told me to go for it and i didn't need asking twice. I had only just walked into the field when the hare sprung his seat and he was about 200 yards away, i was in two minds whether to slip or not but my bitch seemed fresh so i let her go. It seemed to take for ever for her to reach it but she finally got there and began to get the hare under control. After coursing him for a couple of mins the hare looked like it was tiring and a good strick from my bitch ended the course just about where it had begun. As my bitch struck i heard a cheer go up from the lads back at the vans and i was 100% proud of my game little bitch. After a quick talk back at the vans we set of for home, but didn't get far before my mates van broke down and we needed to ring the other lads that had been coursing with us to tow us home. Another bit of bad luck but the great day coursing made up for the bits of bad luck !!! When we get together now we still talk about this day as all the dogs that were there that day ran really well and it was just a GREAT DAYS Coursing. I've not written this to brag my dogs up and i didn't want it to be as long but when you get talking about those great days out i could Talk Dogs all day !!!!!!!! So come on fella's lets here some story's of great days you've had !!!! All the best Tommy Quote Link to post

Tommy 9
Another good day that i had was when my mate was running in a match and i just went along to watch. The bloke that he was running is a bit of a gob shite and was pulling all the dogs local to us down, as he said he had the WONDER dog at that time (don't they always ????) !!! Well we agreed to run him and when the day came around we were confident in what my mates dog could do as he was running ut of his skin at that particullar time. When we arrived at the meeting point i noticed that they had brought two dogs and they explained that one was for coursing any hares after the match was over !!!! Well the land held a few hares and they were the first to run. He got a squatter and the Hare only had about 30 yards start , but it still gave the dog a fair course before it pulled down. My mate let me slip his dog this day (as i'm YOUNGER and FITTER than him LOL ) and i saw a hare loping about on a seed field, i slipped at about 60 yards and the dog had a real good course of about 3 mins before pulling down. The dog was on top of his game and was 100% fit and on my way back to the lads a hare jumped on some rough grass about 50 yards away so i slipped. When i got back my mate was a bit worried as he thought the dog would be better with a longer rest, but his worries were soon dismissed when the dog got the hare out onto a massive field. And after about 3 mins of coursing his second hare he pulled it down in a dyke. I can remember running over to dog as there were some more hares moving about the field and i didn't want him to get onto another hare !!! We then lined out on another plough field looking for their second hare we were in the middle of the ploughing when a hare jumped and i thought that it would soon be over. They slipped at about 60 yards and the dog was soon up to the hare, but the hare managed to get of the ploughing and was making its way to some spinneys. After about 2 mins of coursing their dog was tireing but the hare was still going top gear and he began pulling away and made it to the spinney were the dog lost sight. My mate was now 2-1 up and we agreed to run again and let there dog get a breather !!!! We walked some more field and a Hare was put up to the side of me and had about 100 yards when i slipped. The dog got onto this hare and it took him a while before he got it under control, but he eventually did and after a gruelling 4 mins of coursing pulled down, and the pressure was definitly was off my mates Shoulder !!!!!! The lads with the wonder dog were Gutted and were coming up with the usual excuses e.g grounds to wet and i 'think' dogs hurt his shoulder. The strange thing is i've seen my mate who won the match lose matches and there are never no excuses then !!!!!! It's a case of the BEST dog on the DAY won as simple as that. The lads didn't hang around to run their other wonder dog as they went home in a strop, but it was strange that at a summer show following that season i was informed that GOB SHITES WONDER dog hadn't been beaten a match all season at that none of the big names would run him . Strange also that Gob Shite now has the best Terriers. Some people never learn !!!! All the best Tommy Quote Link to post
