Blake 2
I bought a lurcher off a bloke from St Helens area about 8yrs ago that had 2 working Westies, i didn't see them work but did actually see the dogs. They had heads like the show stuff but had leaner more athletic bodies. He used them mainly for ratting ! With it all coming on top for the Kennel Club with the inbreeding etc, the future might lie in resurrecting some old terrier breeds, with some out crossing! I've heard Pedigree Chum and the RSPCA have pulled the plug on Crufts after the revelations about the inbreeding on the BBC documentary???? dannys lad 0
a few lads who i talk to on hear are talking about trying to start ther own strain off working scottish terriers i think its the way forward getting the old breeds back up and running again Quote Link to post
scouse moocher 0
Like most terriers i'm sure at one point the breed was used for purpose i.e pest control. The breed standard set by the Kennel Club alone is enough to suggest the breed would not be up to the task of meeting the standards required by the terrier men today. I'm sure 100 years ago the breed was more capable and a better built stamp of dog. I can see how westies and scotties could still be useful but i think you'd find it hard to find anyone with a proven working bloodline belonging to any terrier / hound that has been bred with so much cosmetic emphasis for so many years. Horses for courses i suppose. Ant Quote Link to post
Joe Kelly 0
I met a lady a few years back who was walking her two terriers. one was a Yorkshire terier and the other was a bigger yorkshire cross , so I thought. I asked her what is the bigger terrier adn she said that it was a pure Yorkshire that was from a breeder who had successfully inlarged the breed through his breeding programme. It looked like a westie with a yorkshiore coat. The larger of the two I could see fit for a few rats, thats about all . Sure thats what they were bred for anyways, ratting in the mines.
