My whippet pup is 12 weeks old. Here is his daily menu.

Morning - a weetabix + milk

Afternoon - scrambled egg, left over bits of toasted brown bread + milk

Evening – meat (either cooked leftovers or uncooked)

Night – bread soaked in milk

He has water available all day and I use bits dry dog food to encourage recall and get him to sit. I would welcome opinions on what I’m feeding him at the moment.

Advice appreciated

Eamonn

Guest little lurcher

drop one of the cereal milky meals and repalce with raw chicken , either a couple of large wings or frame , should really be on 2 meaty meals and 2 cereal , hope this helps , nothing to worry about though

I put this on another thread yesterday:

I have pups of 14 weeks here at the moment. Their breakfast is live yoghurt: couple of spoonfuls each in the morning. Then scrambled eggs and toast OR cooked rice and pilchards or some other oily fish OR minced raw rabbit with lamb fat added and a handful of rolled oats for roughage.

they generally get a big meaty bone or a bit of breast of lamb for lunch. Something they can sit and chew for ages tearing off bits of meat and fat etc, but at this age nothing they could grind up and swallow: they've only got baby teeth!

Supper is meat: either minced beef and rabbit if I've got rabbit, a little tripe (not a lot of goodness in tripe but they love it), minced raw veg and fruit (about 15% of the total), a handful of cooked rice or pasta. Or minced chicken carcases and whole wings to chew on. If they swallow a chicken wing whole it won't hurt them at all and their stomach juices will dissolve it before it gets to the gut.

I feed as much as they can eat at one sitting. And I do add SA37 as a supplement, as well as Dorwest Herb's Keepers Mix.

I know this all sounds like a lot of hard work, and it would be much easier just to chuck some dry food in a bowl, but I'm happy with how they do on this and I've reared pups like this for many years.

It all depends on what I have available: they don't get exactly the same thing every day, but the basis is meat. Hope this helps.

P.S. Just to add: if you really can't be bothered doing all that then you would be better off getting a very good (expensive) complete food for pups, but by the sounds of it you are clearly trying to give the pup a natural diet: just remember that animal protein ie meat should be the basis for all meals: try it and watch that pup grow! Bread and milk won't hurt for the odd filler in meal, but contain nowhere near enough protein for a growing pup: don't forget its not just what you can see in the pup that counts: internal organs, bones etc all need more than slops to develop properly, especially for a working dog.

Skycat I did look at the other post but thought it was for an older dog. I have now gone through it in more detail and will change his diet to the following.

morning

scrambled egg+ SA37+ drink of milk

mid morning

Raw rib, chicken wings or a meaty bone to chew when he is left on his own

Afternoon

Cooked rice/pasta/bread and oily fish

Or Minced raw rabbit/lamb + rolled oats

Evening

Any cooked leftover meat or raw meat ( minced beef or minced rabbit/chicken carcase) +

liquidised raw veg and fruit,

Thanks for all your advice.
