J Darcy 5,871
following on from the sal/grey for the moocher thread: A few days later i decided to take another walk down onto the rough grassland to see what was about. Scoob, charv and i took our time, weaving through the dead thistles that abound on such rough, uncultivated land. Little charv flushed a trio of snipe from some boggy rush and they zig-zagged off into the air until out of sight. Quote Link to post

J Darcy 5,871
It was obvious from the start that there was little scent about...both dogs did not have much interest for at least ten minutes until we reached some good thick bramble. Scoob pushed himself into the dense cover and immediatly flushed a hen pheasant. She cheaped and flapped away to land in the reeds. Not to worry. At a gap i could see my dog on the deer run that traversed the full length of the bramble patch. This patch is about 1/2 mile long but only narrow. Charva was exploring scent of his own in a large bed of dead dock plants, which was nice to see. I walked on the outside hoping to see is anything broke, my heart momentarily rose when i heard a crash. A cock bird towered upwards shouting his head off in protest at being disturbed. It would have been a fine catch for scoob , but these birds are not that easy to catch. Come to think of it, nothing on this land is easy to catch. For the next minute or so ther was silent until a flash caught my eye. It was the dazzling rump of a roe. This critter was not running , but cautiosly making its way through the dock away from my general direction. What to do? should i call scoob and make the roe flee, or shall i wait to see what happens? i chose the latter. It was clear that in front of me, about one hunred yards away were a brace of roe. But where was that bloody dog? :search: even though i was looking for the one i adore i never saw him until the roe paniced and made a run for it. Then sudenly, as if by magic, he appeared at their heals. How he kept in contact through the rough grass i will never know, they vanished out of sight and seconds later i heard the sound that meant game over. Charv and i hurried over and found scoob lay down on the grass with a nice chunky doe. charv didnt know what to make of such a creature, Sure, he had seen well over fifty deer carcases in his short life but this was different. A freshly killed, warm roe was an altogether different prospect than a day old stiff, cold carcase. As for scoob?. he was laid down, panting like mad. His deep chest heaving and toe rather swollen. it was hunting in its most primative form. The only human intervention was the fact that i drove him to my permission. The dog did the rest. On the rough ground he found by scent, flushed , hunted up and run down this roe before killing it single handed with a lethal throat hold. The meat will not go to waste. What is wrong with such pursuit? all immaterial now anyway guys because such a hunt is now illegal. good hunting ....JD Quote Link to post

LDR 29
As always an enjoyable read, it's good to know that with the years of experience under your belt i'd expect you could probably find loads of pics from days when it was legal so we would never need to go short on tales. I'm assuming it's not yet illegal to post pics from before the ban........... Quote Link to post
