Guest world.hunters
main reason for road walking is that it helps tighten up the feet and strengthen there pads. and can help with stamina if they are on long constant jogging along side a bike etc. W.h Quote Link to post

LDR 29
Also hardens the tendons, so less chance of an injury!!! Quote Link to post
Meerihunter 7
Interesting idea's, I have often wondered why Arabs and Kazakhs and the likes do not road walk there Salukis yet they have some the best feet in the business and are run over some of the harshest terrain imaginable. Not saying it doesn't do them any good, but does it do any more good than plenty of good off lead exercise and hunting alone. Edited November 13, 2008 by Meerihunter Quote Link to post

They dont have roads do they, just dirt tracks and deserts........................ Quote Link to post

Meerihunter 7
Not really so much baked hard more loose and rubbly in the area I was anyway. That was the point I was trying to make does it need to be roads or compact hard track to benefit them does simply turning dogs loose over a variety of surfaces not have the same effect? I do a bit everything but mostly I just walk them out over fields, dunes beach and forests with some sustained running behind the truck mostly round dirt/grass tracks and stubbles. LDR 29
I think just a hard surface mate, i worked with polo horses and they had 6 weeks of road work, to harden the tendons and gradually build fitness till they could up the pace, this was after they'd been turned out all winter!!1 I'd imagine if your dogs are out getting exercise all year round, it might not be so important, but for the people who leave their dogs in a kennel all summer long might benefit from starting with a bit of road work??? Meerihunter 7
Without doubt for soft well rested dogs as much conditioning as possible prior to running them can only limit any risk of injury, we all know the risk of over keen dogs going back to work after long summer lay offs. I do keep mine ticking over year round the Saluki don't do this resting up thing well. They will tend to find there own outlet for their energy if not provided with one. What are eveyones views distance, speed, gait for conditioning? Don't laugh but I'm serously considering these Landrollers after seeing Cesar Millan using them, I don't know why I have never thought of them before now. Quote Link to post
dytkos 17,861
All my dogs get 3 to 5 miles a day normally on soft tracks and fields but I try to give them at least 1/2 mile a day for the aforementioned reasons. Cheers, D. Quote Link to post
