some local running

ask FR how fast they are while he's chasing one around a field :clapper:

They don't move like a hare or a fox or dog or cat, they lope more like a bear than anything else, but can be quick when they are moving away. The little ones can run easier, but we don't run them. Often the big ones don't run at all, they turn and fight more often than not. They do not have big jaws like a fox or coyote, and I've not ever heard of a dog being killed by a coon (other than drowning). BUT their teeth and claws can do a lot of damage, and dogs do poorly from not being properly looked after. Our first couple of coon this season tend to really muck-up a dog, here's a couple of pics of dogs that just had simple scratches from the coon that within days turned the scratches into gel and their skin was painful, hair sloughed off ... it was wierd. Now the scratches and bites scab right over and are fine within a week versus the 2 weeks these dogs were very sore.

The salukiX was having her first night out, we normally run them single. She's pretty small as well.

not yet, Tia broke a nail clean off on that 5-a-nighter so she is laid up in sick bay with every other running dog we have right now ...

we'll be going to visit the Amish next week and hopefully that will net some brand new property to try out when you are here! Did you see the post about the Walnuts? I put that pic of Jugs up for you!

I think it was about two night before these pics was taken, but we was out with our big wheaten coloured bitch called 'Tor',..

I was spoting, we had FR behind the wheel, and WyoJRT was in the back (where all women should be!)...two coons bolt infront of us, and the dog is sent to them...of course, she goes for the bigger, and he was a good size at about 25lbs...

The bitch made contact, and starts trying to get things under control, and they roll behind an old house...we then start hearing muffled barking, like she is barking, but with her mouth full!?...WTF!?!?!

So go go to them, with the knife and a flashlight (torch for you boys back home... :D ) and she hasnt come off the coon, its well balled up on her head, and she is driving it into the ground, but there is TWO other coons there!...one is smaller, around 15lbs, and its circlying them, hissing and growling, and squaling on...the other, i would guess at about 20lbs, has climbed up the bitches back legs, and is chewing at her ham-strings!...i kicked at the smaller coon, and it fecked off staright away, and the one hanging on her just carried on!...i kicked him off, and for a split second, he came at her again, then i shone the light in his face, and he thought better of it!...CRAZY exsperiance!!!

The 'Tor' bitch done well that night, i think she got two coons, a ditch cougar, and a possom (released un-harmed)...we got a run on a fox, but the battery gave out, so hope to see him another day!...

Raccoons are a great quarry, i love 'em!...great for hounds, lurchers, terriers, and turns out they make great pets (so far anyway!)

Hi RatKillah,..

FR has 1500 acres that we havent touched yet mate...we will scout it out after deer season, and keep it for you!..lol.

Can you remember that great spot last year, when we kept finding dead coon in the holes?...from distemper!?...well we was there at the weekend, and we found EIGHT dead coon in holes!!!...i guess that area is somehow holding the distemper!?...a real shame as well, as its a great spot...we got all the dead coon outta the holes though, so i hope that will help...we seen eight coon the other night RK, a mob working a cut corn field...we just got one from it though, and there seems to be a lot of fox activity this year...maybe the distemper has thinned the yotes out, and that has helped the fox numbers?...who knows...but we found two pulled out fox earths, and seen one on the lamp the other night....a fair few dead on the roads, including a few Gray Fox, which is cool to see!

Cant wait for you to get over mate!...so much to do!

liar! Bad pets! Well, one of ours is, anyway. The light colored coon can stay in the damn cage, she bit me last week so if it was up to me, she'd no longer be in our home. BUT Kye thinks if we get rid of her that the outgoing one will turn wild, so we are stuck with the two of them.

actually I think it was the blonde death WyoJRT that mentally killed all the coon ... one thing after another kept dropping dead or breaking before our very eyes (except for the dog leash that GIMP chewed through, I owe you one Erin!)

she dropped her expensive camera in a creek while waiting for Kye and FR to quit F'ing around a HUGE pile of even huger trees and dirt that is NOT diggable ... Kye's lamp broke once, bulb broke once, Tia's toenail MUST have been her fault, Slag and Tor and Blister's coon damage ... christ the list is a mile long ...

their paws are more like hands than anything else, and you really have to handle them to understand what I mean. Their fingers and thumb can move around in like 180 degree rotations, and if they hold onto something (a bowl, food item, wire on cage, etc) it is really diffucult to pry them off. Poking and prodding a dead coon or even seeing them worked by a dog is not the same as being around one and seeing how much dexterity they have in their digits. Oh and they are strong as f**k, you wouldn't know it unless you experience it.

here's a pic of our "good" girl, she's about 6 months old now I guess? Clever, smart, interesting to watch ... I just hope she stays that way! I'll try and take some pics of her paws and "fingers" and try to explain better how they work?

Not fair, you should respect your elders...... :clapper:

I must look like Ratkillah in the Colorado wastelands trying to catch a wounded jackrabbit in a farmers front garden.....like a gimp chasing a shiny ball...... :boogy::rofl:
