cymruguy69 5
How do you guys get your dogs fit (muscled up) Is it basically run the dog hard and watch their food intake, or isit road walking and so on?? This is a pic of my 11 month old pup as you can see he's not "fit" even though he does take a long time to tire. It's just he's not Muscled up and his ribs aren't showing. Would you say I'm feeding him to much because he get's plenty of exercise?? Cheers Edited November 12, 2008 by cymruguy69 Quote Link to post

Cheers He's only a baby, he needs time to develop , give him a couple of months, then if you can, let him run beside the bike, mile or so to start, then build up, how fit you need him depends on what you do, if lamping 2-3 nights and loads of slips he should be naturally fit. IF not on bike daily Quote Link to post
sandymere 8,263
At 11 months it's only a pup so plenty of feed a little road work and a gallop and let nature take it's course. When it's a little more mature it will change a fair bit. Quote Link to post
artic 595
Not all dogs will show the "Ribs" or show the "Muscle" due to texture of coat etc...... My 16 month gets 2/3 One hour walks everyday, unless im out hunting in daylight then most of the day my older one will be out. My 4 month old pup gets around 45 mins each day. He's at the stage of just finding his gears and no brakes! They are fed Twice a day, and i would say for their ages they are bouncing. Quote Link to post
dangergirl 13
My dogs get between 1-2 hours walking a day. The whippet is only five and a half months though and i have often thought i was doing to much with him; but he never seems tierd and hes get fed 3 times a day on complete food and venison, rabbit, mackrel or chicken wings maybe 3 times a week. I geuss when hes older and out on the lamp 2-3 times a week aswell as his daily exercise he will muscle naturally. I personally cant see the point in over muscling a running dog; i have herd it can impead a dogs porformance. DG Quote Link to post

dangergirl 13
, The venison was shot in our field. It had broken back legs, god knows how it got like that. It was trying to run along on its front legs, poor thing. I was not sure if the deer was septic as the legs had broken throgh the skin, so it was butchered for dog food, lucky buggers. He does try his luck if the cat runs, but they all know shes the boss!! Quote Link to post

Chanuk 7
All dogs mature slower or faster than others. I wouldnt worry bud he is still very young.A growing dog can change alot within 6-8 weeks. Genetics can also have a big role to play with muscle definition. A dog doesnt just have to have big muscle to be fit. If you look at a marathon runner he isnt built like a body builder his body is formed to its job. Edit to add nice dog bud. cymruguy69 5
Cheers guys you've put my mind at ease. I know he's still a baby but my whippet cross who is 2 and a half now muscled up at 9 months so I automatically thought it would be the same for him. He is a much bigger dog being 26.5 inches to the shoulder. I'm going to keep his food intake up and regular walks and gallops. Hopefully I'l be lamping with him over 3 times a week depending on land and weather. He's showing really good promise retrieving a rabbit live to hand on a recent trip out. but I won't be starting him tidy untill he's 13 months. Cheers Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
Don't expect a bit 26" dog to be fully mature until it is at least 18 months old. The skeleton alone will take up to 15 months to finish growing: then add on another 6 months for the muscles to develop fully. Big dogs aren't physically mature until 2 years or even more: untold damage can be done by running them hard before then: a few runs out on the lamp is fine, but serious sustained work must be worked up to gently. Another thing: the heart is also a muscle! Everything needs to be built up to gradually: so many dogs are ruined before they are 2 years old. Yes, they might appear fine but come 4 years old when they should be in their prime, some start showing signs of having been fecked early on. Waiting another 6 months or so before really working a dog hard is a small price to pay for a dog that should serve you well for 6 years or more, barring accidents of course. Quote Link to post
