secret fish followed on

i would say defo a kelt ,they will pick up food on the way back to the sea have had it happen to me on big lures for pike also dead baits , also it would be in the river that time of year making its way back ,sea trout dont get to that size very often ,also it looks spent[like it has lost a lot of weight ] if it was a sea trout and lost weight and was as heavy has you say then in its prime it would be close on 30lb ,that would be exceptionally big for one ,and prob a record fish .pity the tail cant be seen v shape for salmon more round for sea trout, that is the reason sea trout are harder to hold by the tale it pulls through your hand easier than the v on a salmon.

The fish doesnt look spent1 I know a spwaned out fish when i see one, lol. It was solid, well in proportion, and fought like a demond.... This fish had not just laid spawn, that is to all who have asked the question.....ASnd i have other pics of the fish, which show its tail much better than this, but my face is even worse, lol. Cheers

I would say it is a hen Salmon kelt.

There are 6 things that make me think this.

1. The length of the maximil plate in relation to the eye.

2. The grip that he has on its wrist he would not be able to grip a Sea trout in the same way.

3. The adipose fin is inflamed.

4. If you look at the vent of the fish it is protruding.

5. The dorsal fin looks as if it has a touch of UDN.

6. If it were a springer it would have just entered the river system, and been a bar of silver. This fish looks coloured although it is hard to tell by the photo.

Of course I may be completely wrong.

it def is not in a good condition ,like i said it prob had lost most of its weight, during spawning but because it is prob one of the

very early run fish it is on its way back to the sea and has built it self up by feeding ,that is why it took your bait [this is just my opinion ]

i agree with the above 100% its a hen salmon kelt that is on her way to mending after spawning during which time they turn silver again (though not that of a fresh run fish) making ready for the return to salt water and can be easily caught. also its the ligaments in a salmons tail that allow it to be picked up by the tail as a seatrout doesnt have these.

Let me apoligize firstly for the quality of the photograph used in this artical,,..... Wont say to much about this this fish because everything about it is bizarre!!!

This salmon was caught on the 30th December!! In a frozen river!! on a live bait!! measuring nearly 10"" long!!! and was a golden trout!! Now it is hard enough to get a slamon to take a small fly, never mind a f... off lively livebait. As salmon once in the river rarely feed, and that is why they are so difficult to catch. They have one thing on there mind, and usually have to be wound up by the constant casting of a fly, that they strike!

And what the hell was this salmon doing in the river at this time of the year!!And feeding in such cold conditoins.

The salmon didnt look like it was dieing like alot do after or before spawning, it looked fit and fought like nothing else i have hooked, and i have pike and cats to well over 30lb.

It weighted 21lb and i returned it alive(if i had got caught on the river, never mind with a salmon in my persession i would have been in the shit, lol)
