Secret fish from undisclosed stillwater

Recommended Posts

I was flicking through some old photographs and reflecting on days gone by... I then came across a few predators that werewnt meant to be there, and had gone undetected for most of there lifes.

The eel in question is my personnal best, and believe that i am exstremely lucky to have caught such a big fish, as eels of this size are very very few and far between..Awater i used to baliff some 20yrs back was the landing place of this great fish....

While piking on this difficult sindicate water, i had a very unusual run, which i could only discribe as an eel take! Nothing more happened until about 12mths later, when more or less the same thing hapened in roughly the same area.

I usually only fish for eels in scotland, at certain times of the year but decided on putting a night campaign together to see if much materialized. Using deads and lives on my Eeling gear, a friend and i put in 18 night sessions. It was on the third night in that i had the one and only run from an eel. We fished on and on after it, in the hope of more but nothing happened. Never had i heard of an eel being taken from this water, and never since to my knowledge.

The eel weighted 7lb 1oz!! And fed in bitterly cold conditions (when eels were at truth meant to hibernating!) but this is when the 2 previous runs had acured! Now an eel of this size will be at least 50yrsplus of age, and i should imagine would have soon been heading back to the saragasa sea to spawn and die, just think if i had not acted on the dropped rund, this eel would have gone unnoticed all of its life.... What a creature!

Thats a pretty serious eel mate.

Ive caught a few gooduns in my time but mostly by accident but nothing that big. Eels are one of the few fish where theres still a bit of mystery over. Theres lots of waters that are land locked and hold some big old snakes, But nobody really targets them seriuosly round my way. Its quiet likely if you caught no more from that water that they may have run to sea. Or someone had took them for the pot

Nah, there where eels in the water in the first place, probarbly a freak fish, the river was no more than 100yrds away, so it had obviously reached the water from there.....the only thing being, that the river in question used to be one of the worst poluted in england!! and at the time the eel will have ran the river it was probarbly beofre the second world war, so it could have still been clean!! madness when you think aboutit....
