scotsman5 0
hey. im new to the game of ferreting but have been shooting and fishing with years. i recently bought two polecat ferrets, that are 11 months old. i know i should probably have reared them from kits but i took the easier option. my problem is that one ferret is very calm and can easily be handled but the other is totally unpredictable and when ever he is afraid or nervous he can bite to the bone . so any tips for calming him down??????? or will it just take time? The one 8,503
Always handle them after you have feed them he will be less inclinded to bite you then Quote Link to post
stubby 175
as everyone says, constant handling, also try either "spit" on your finger tip, they like that, or get some ferret malt paste from the pet shop, the more you handle it, the better it will get, Quote Link to post
will.f11 24
keep handling mate, this may sound cruel, but pick him up and force your index finger into its mouth, he wont want it in there so make it unpleasant without hurting it. everytime it bitesdown, push your finger back further. it will associate your finger with not being nice so wont want it in his mouth. I do this with mine and always works. but handling is always the answere Quote Link to post
droid 11
get him by the scruff and give him a flick on the nose that should learn him Don't. Meeting violence with violence rarely works, you'll just end up with a scared ferret that's good to neither man nor beast. Quote Link to post

The ferrets you have are probs a lot less than 11 months old if they are this years, they usually drop around late april - june if lined straight away, so probs only 7 months old at best. Go easy on them, the young uns of mine are still pinning me when i least expect it, they will soon grow out of it with daily handling, Just offer up the back of your fist to them when approaching, if's harder for them to bite this, and hurts less when they do than the finger ends!
