ferret that bites

Recommended Posts

hey. im new to the game of ferreting but have been shooting and fishing with years. i recently bought two polecat ferrets, that are 11 months old. i know i should probably have reared them from kits but i took the easier option. my problem is that one ferret is very calm and can easily be handled but the other is totally unpredictable and when ever he is afraid or nervous he can bite to the bone :icon_eek: . so any tips for calming him down??????? or will it just take time?

be very confident with them keep holding them all the time as dm says and threw time they will get better

if he keeps biting get him by the scruff and give him a flick on the nose that should learn him :)

keep handling mate, this may sound cruel, but pick him up and force your index finger into its mouth, he wont want it in there so make it unpleasant without hurting it. everytime it bitesdown, push your finger back further. it will associate your finger with not being nice so wont want it in his mouth. I do this with mine and always works. but handling is always the answere

The ferrets you have are probs a lot less than 11 months old if they are this years, they usually drop around late april - june if lined straight away, so probs only 7 months old at best.

Go easy on them, the young uns of mine are still pinning me when i least expect it, they will soon grow out of it with daily handling, Just offer up the back of your fist to them when approaching, if's harder for them to bite this, and hurts less when they do than the finger ends!

took em out for a run today, one was totally relaxed and let me handle him, the other was still nervous so i put him back in the cage. the quiet ferret (fred)freaked the second they were separated and bit me on the finger right under the nail, the little bugger. but at least he was ok up to that point. so at least their coming along some bit :D
