Great Season !!!!

Recommended Posts

Well fella's i've finished with the running dogs for the season now and it seems to have been and gone all so quickly. It seems just two minutes back when i was walking the dogs getting them fit in July/August and now its time to give there well earned summer rest !!!

This season has been really busy and i have managed to fit a lot of time out with the dogs as work allows this, not starting work until 3.00pm !! From September really i've tried to be out at least twice a week (weather permitting) running the big rabbits and have had a couple of invites onto some permission for lamping and a bit of terrier work !! The dogs i have been running are litter sisters and will be 5 years old at the start of next season and have run really well for me this season !! We've had some memorable days this past season and that includes watching other peoples, not just my own dogs running. I dont keep a diary of the amount of game we get but i'm 100% sure we were up on previous years and all that has been caught, excluding 1 big rabbit have been taken single handed !!

One of the best days out was getting my mates dog his first single handed kill in early september. The dog had tasted a few kills the previous season but hadn't taken one solo. I can remember as if it was yesterday the dog running a big rabbit single handed on the last day of the 2004/2005 season and from the performance that the dog put up we were buzzing think of the runs the dog would have in the next season. Like i say we got him his first single handed kill in september, but by november/december it was clear that the dog wasn't up to the standard and he was found a pet home (with the owners daughter), a shame really as the dog was a lovely dog and had a great nature.

As you will have gathered i get just about as much pleasure from watching other peoples dog work as i do watching my own and I’ve been out lamping a few times this season and just watched a mates dog run.

Hopefully next season will see as much Lurcher work !!!

Come on fella's lets here about your season ??? Have you had a good un ???

All the best Tommy ;);)

its been a strange season for me,i have had more foxes by far than any other,at the start of the year they seeed to be in evey other field, got fair share of venison too, then i started takng my young dogs out,the weather seemed to go really cold,i dont think i lamped at all one month, the pups came on really well at the end,the dog pup getting 8 on his third time out,the bitch getting 8 then 8 again on her third and fourth time out,so all in all not bad coming to think of it.

:) Had a good season weather has been a nuisance around xmas particularly I started out in early september not really knowing what to expect having got a collie/greyhound bitch from local rescue in may & weve gone from strength to strength, i was certain that the first time i slipped her she would bugger off & that would be that but she didnt & weve had some great sport on rabbits large & small  just a few months ago i came by a pup of unknown breeding allegedly a greyhound & she had her first night last week & caught 2 on the trot followed by 3 a couple of nights later so i went home with a feeling in my heart that only us hunting folk understand :D thats more or less it for this season & i hope there are many more for us all to enjoy :)

Happy Hunting The Chimp :D

Heres a quick pic of my nephew (hopefully a future lurcher man) and the two dogs i've been running this season !!! Now the season for the running dogs over i think i will spend some time just having early morning or late evening walks with the dogs as theres always plenty of wildlife to be seen. Hopefully i will take my Nephew out plenty of times throughout the summer and maybe take him ratting with the terriers on the nearby stream !!!

Started off great, got 104 rabbits 1st night between 3 dogs, (Jazz got 36 out of 46 runs). Then a short time later on holiday visiting friends in Shropshire in Sept, she had 2 runs on the lamp and came back holding up her leg, she snapped her rear ligament. 2 operations later and is still not fit enough to run properly now. Khan now has several knocked up toes so working is only when he is steady enough.

The terriers have had it slightly better, mink, ratting and rabbits. But due to lots of reasons including moving the ratting has been few and far between.

Having said all that they have had more rabbits than ever just on their daily walks, starting to work much better as a team.

We all hope to be much fitter for next season, and a big plus...ive been given rabbit permission on the farm im living at.

Good luck everyone for the coming season.

MOLL.

All right Countryman !!!

My dogs are bred from a line of Lurcher that has been going around local to me for at least twenty years, they are basically Greyhound x Collie x Bedlington x Saluki. That was the Dam of these dogs line. The sire was a Saluki lurcher that originated from a traveller in Leeds before a friend bought the dog. These dogs are used mainly for daytime work on the Big Rabbits  ;) !!!

me and my mates had a good season, taking 265 rabbits, a few with the gun the rest with the ferrets and the dogs.Saturdays were ferreting all day. the dogs (3 lurchers and 1 terrier) are really keen, we were taking a few rabbits every sunday afternoon just on a mooch about, sometimes taking a ferret and bolting a few for the dogs. They were also getting good on the lamp until someone decieded they needed one of my mates dogs more than he did and stole one of the lurchers and the terrier from his garden in broard daylight. :realmad: THEY NEED THERE HANDS CUTTING OFF.(the other two dogs belong to my other mate and kept else wear) we had a few days beating as well which was good taking pheasant, duck, squirell, rabbits, fox et. .anyway got hold of a long net now, but need some sticks can anyone recomend anything for this. here is a picture of a good day, we had working four ferrets at the same time in a big earth (130 holes) wear i could have done with the long net, we had 17 there but the best day we had was 23 rabbits in three and a half hours.17rabbitsCompressed.jpg:good:
