tote 854
When I got home from the river at 4pm it was blowing a fair bit and it looked likely to be a decent night for a shine.I gave Jimmy a ring to see if he wanted to go for a look with Bob, "eh, aye go on then i'll come round at 7pm", said Jimmy.. I said okay then , see you at 7, maybe he was on a promise and wanted home early. When we arrived at my permission the wind was even stronger and there was a fair bit of rain falling.Bob had 3 runs in the first field and caught the second rabbit so we were off the mark.I decided to enter the second field at the opposite end than I usually enter it,when I flicked the light on there were rabbits everywhere. The only downside was,as soon as the beam hit them they were on the move.We walked up the side of the fence about 50 yards then had another scan with the beam.4 or 5 rabbits appeared in the light,I put the beam on the nearest rabbit and Jimmy slipped Bob, instead of going for the rabbit that was illuminated by the beam he ran past it to another rabbit and dissapeared across the field. There is a dip at the far side of this field and Bob had ran into it after the rabbit, two minutes later and Bob was still out of sight. It didn't seem to matter to him that Jimmy was shouting and whistling for him.I was scanning the field with the lamp and eventually spotted him up at the far end running about with his nose to the ground. When Jimmy eventually got him back there wasn't a rabbit left in the field. I'd say there was easily 50 rabbits in that field and we hadn't got one. Into the third field where once again Bob chose to chase a different rabbit to the one that I had the light on.He had 3 runs in this field and did get a rabbit but it was a mixy one. In the next field Bob had 5 runs and caught 1 rabbit,I was dissapointed with his first 2 runs in this field as it didn't look like he was putting it all in, Jimmy thought the same. We cut across a sand and gravel quarry next and Bob did well to catch the only rabbit he was slipped on. The next field we lamped was very much in favour of the dog as the fence the rabbits were trying to get through was heavily overgrown with weeds, nettles etc and finding their runs was proving difficult for them.Bob managed 5 rabbits from 7 runs in this field, most of the rabbits were caught in the undergrowth at the bottom of the fence. We had 9 rabbits in the bag and Jimmy was looking to make it 10 or more on our return journey back to the car.It wasn't to be however,Bob had 3 runs and even knocked one over but didn't manage to catch any of them so he ended the session with 9 rabbits from 23 runs. Guest ASD
Well done tote ,i'm surprisd the dog if you were correct in thinking was "not putting it all in" with breeding like that, plenty of sighthound in it's makeup, you'd think he'd run through a brickwall for a bunny and even more frustrating if he's keen to hunt up for them in the dark, dogs are funny buggers at times and can make a mockery out of the best of fellas as i'm sure your aware with being amongst Greyhounds...things don't always go to plan .Cheers Andy.
