A bit of action.

Recommended Posts

I was out and about in the hills of God knows where yesterday checking earths for a bit of terrier work next Sunday.Well in the process I droped my phone.so I decided to go look for it this morning.I had spoted a few rabbits useing some ground setts and thought I'd kill 2 birds with the one stone and get a few hours sport while out there. After giving up the ghost of ever finding my phone I headed for the warrens and with hob and 40 purse nets in tow I proceeded to net up all 3 warrens and hope for the best.I took my KelpieX with me as shes 5 months old now and starting to pay attention to whats going on around her a little. After what seemed like an age I had all the holes covered with nets, the 3 warrens spread across the entire length of the field, those being a few hundred feet apart. So back to the ferret box and out comes the old hob,hes 5 years old now and a tremendous worker, non stop hunter in the depts of the earth, well in he goes.He first entered at 11.35 and I stood back waiting for a bit of action.Well action I got,4 rabbits flew from the darkness at the same time, all netted and screaming,I ran from one to the other,TAZ had hold of 1,she was just lying there holding the rabbit. No pulling no messing,I was very happy.....until 1 rabbit kicked off a net and made good his escape :censored: I always use the neck pull to deal with the rabbits but for some unknown reason I reverted back to the rabbit chop, its a mystery even to me why I did this.I was under a bit of pressure to get these rabbits out and set up new nets so maybe thats why I acted like this, anyway,I set up the nets and extracted the dead bunnies and would ye believe it 3 more rabbits again simutaneously left the safety of the warren.Same procedure,3 chops and replace the nets,I was flipping buzzing as was taz.I was very happy with her rock steady no nonsense behavour, especially for a 5 month old pup.I could still hear the occupants of this warren giving the hob the runaround, then 1 hit the nets followed by another right behind him and free as a bird he was......BAS***D,then another.Talk about fast and furious :clapper: The feret showed and dissapeared again but after afew minutes it was deemed an empty warren.

Onto the next set of burys, ferret in and in no time we had 5 more rabbits,TAZ held 2 of these and in the future I'm sure shes going to be a great help to me.After the ferret let me know theres no more at home we walked to the next set.Ferret in,a few bumps and a rabbit shows at the mouth of the hole,I froze solid hoping he would exit rather than re enter,I stood there for 1 minute or so and he just sat there watching me,TAZ blissfully unaware the rabbits was there at all. Then it dawned on me the ferret had to be swinging off of his rear,I whispered to TAZ to ''watch up'' and her ears lifted. Her attention then went to the holes. She spotted the rabbit and I was expecting her to make a mad dash for the furry fellow but she gingerly took a few steps closer and to watch this really made me happy, she was using her brain. She made a sudden burst but the rabbit shot back inside.Luckily the ferret held him a foot or so just inside the mouth,I reached in and pulled both out together.I seperated the victim and pursuer and dealt with the rabbit and ferrt was straight back to work.In the next 15-20 minutes I had another 3 rabbits, ferret showed and I decided that it might be a good time to call it a day.It was now 2.30 and I had 17 rabbits in the bag,not bad for 1 man and his very young apprentice. To say I was pleased is an understatement.I decided that after the gutting and leging of the rabbits I'd take a stroll up the hill to the top fields to see what the population of the rabbits would be like. When I reached the flat fields above there were loads of rabbits about, all sitting way out in the fields.TAZ hadnt a clue where to run, rabbits running about everywhere. Her inexperiencereally showed here, she tried to chase rabbits that were obviously untouchable, but in time she'll learn.I watched her use her nose to a great extent, and at 1 point she flushed a hidden rabbit from its seat, gave chase and realised how futile her efforts were. But on the whole I think TAZ has picked up some great experience today.I wont have her out again for another two to three weeks as I dont want to over do it with her.I look forward to our future together, pity I didnt find my phone. It would have been a perfect end to an almost perfect day.I have pics taken but the camera was bought in LIDL and I cant for the life of me work out how to get them into my pictures on the puter.Hope you found this little excursion interesting.
