Guest baldie Posted October 9, 2006 Report Share Posted October 9, 2006 Bend the farmers ear, moll, i,ll bet he knows someone who does logs, that,ll eak out your coal nicely, theres usually someone doing it.My mate does a trailer load for around 75 quid i think, down here.Its a nice little sideline to their gardening buisness, as they have a big yard , log splitter, etc.You want one of them little electric greenhouse heaters for the damp bedroom, they run on bugger all, and keep everything aired, they are also good for kennels. As a student we used to collect wood from the river bank which got washed down with the floods, used to keep us warm at any rate and cost us nothing but loading it in the car and cutting it. Guest MOLLY Posted October 9, 2006 Report Share Posted October 9, 2006 moll being welsh i know all about coal fires ... last thing at night bank your fire up with all the small coal and dust and leave it burn on slow .... first thing in the morning move your slider to open up the fire and when you see flames start to flicker put on the normal lumps ........ Ive also had coal fires untill a few years ago, ive tried everything, although not the dust, this coal doesnt seem to produce much. Ill hopefully have all 3 fires on this winter, see if that makes a difference....Steve brings old scaffoldong boards for me to burn, they make good kindling too....anything and everything gets burned MOLL. Some of the planted beds have perenials in and the other annuals so they can also be rotated for veg....i usually grow veg and flowers mixed anyway. Ash is The Best wood ye can get ye hands on. Grows like a weed and burns like hell! Price is right; 75 a load. We pay that here (Euro's) for wood or turf (peat). Coal seems expensive to you? Maybe it's that sky warmer eating it??? Listen; That great mud swamp out there? Get it tarmacked!!! Honestly. I had the same, right outside my door, when I got here. It's f***ing useless! Never goes away. Dogs drag it in. I've had it 'macked and now it's bliss! Water f***s off and the Dogs trundle around on it good as gold. That huge mud swamp would probably take a whole years wages to sort Ditchy, it is huge. There are drains under there and allsorts. The farm and all of the surrounding farms and land all belongs to some landowner you see, not the farmer. I am only here for aslong as the farmer is, so this is now the end of my spending. Ive spent enough to make me comfortable, anymore would only be lining the landowners pockets as he will never sell any of his properties But whether i am here for 1yr or 20 it is all worth it and i will/am enjoying......no im LOVING it . We got stone chips from the local quarry here for the mud problem at the front. 6 Euro + vat per tonne and good old elbow grease with a wheelbarrow and after the summer we've had its rock hard now.
