Air Arms or Weihrauch?

Recommended Posts

Hi - I'm disappointed with the build quality (or lack of it) on the old BSA Meteor (internals look as though the local blacksmith has produced most of the parts) and the poor trigger (again, it all looks very agricultural) and repeatability of a recently-purchased Hatsan/Edgar Mod. 105. I know these are "budget" items, and I'm really wishing that I had spent a bit more on something decent. Looking for a full-power (but non-FAC) .22 for static target and grey squirrels (30 yards) and for under £400. Popular items seem to be Air Arms TX200, Weihrauch HW97K, and Theoben Evolution. Could anyone offer some feedback on the pros/cons of these items? I suspect that the TX200 might be better made (i.e. has decent machined components) than the HW97K, and the Evolution may be even better. Any comments on which has most manageable recoil, for example? Could anyone out there who may have owned these models help with a comparison?

Thanks,

Mike

Is it a Springer that you particulary want? or have you thought about a pcp? Will you buy new or look for a good second hand rifle?

For £400 you can buy a decent 2nd hand pcp, i shoot a hw100k and i would recommend it to anyone, but if you are after a springer both of the guns you suggested are well made and both get good reviews, if i were you, I'd try both of them and see which FEELS better for you.

Thanks for all the comments. A pcp would be great, but there's the added expense of buying a bottle or pump to keep it charged. I will look out for a 2nd hand pcp, also a 2nd hand springer but don't want to buy something that's not quite right or might have been "got at" in some way. Have noted that 2nd hand prices are quite high in the dealers. I'll keep looking. Just wish there were more opportunities to try out on a range before buying so that comparisons could be made. I'll keep looking!

Cheers,

Mike.

I was in exactly the same position myself six months back, did all the research on here, brought loads of mags, went to the gun shop with the intention of getting the 97k, ended up comming away the Theoban Evo, just my personal choice after handling all three of the guns you mention above. No doubt there all top notch guns, but i didn't get on too well with the anti-bear trap thingy in the AA tx200 and was a tad heavy for my liking, the 97k, only thing put me off was it seemed to give off a fair old CRACK when fired, perhaps a better silencer would solve that?

The Evo was my choice, nice weight and length, fairly quiet for a non pcp, also because of the gas strut, you get exatly the same power for each shot and there is no spring to wear out and you can leave it cocked for as long as needed. I've done a fair bit of target and huntig with the Evo, the accuracy is incredible... BMW build quality.. a top gun IMHO i wont be swopping mine!

You've got to handle them though before you part with your wonga, hope thats some help.....

Thanks, Bush Rummager! I'm checking out all three this weekend..... the Theoben is beginning to seem more attractive. I'll see how they all feel. Thanks.

The Theoben Evolution is an amazing gun and well worth the money you spend on one ;) I had one in .20caliber and it never let me down. My brother brought it from me, and 10 years down the line it's still going strong :)
