Some of my Gyps badger hunting

Recommended Posts

Bloody hell those porkies can do some damage :o Have you ever been shot with the quills yourself?

When I was a kid we would play w/ any dead ones we found and I have gotten a couple, not painful going in but coming out is painful, It is best to do a couple (20ish)and then let the dog rest a bit then start again..

Blue Collar thanks for the pics mate, and good work on the badgers. Them Porkies look a right pain in the ass. As I understand it, the spines from those porkies are barbed aren't they? How do they get them out? Whats the technique? Can you do it yourself or is it strictly for the vets to do?

Do you get many Porcupines around where you live? That's an animal I wouldn't want my terriers crossing too often.

Top 1/3 of the quill is barbed all the way around it. They just keep moving forward. Only thing to do is pull. Highly reccomend having a vet check over your work.

My DD hit one this time last year and I pulled the last quill out in Feb or March of this year. He hit it and I held him down and pulled 70+ from him. Leashed him and had my bud walk him out of there, then i shot the porkie. My friend had rope burn on his hands as my DD heard the shot and went at it again. Held him down and pulled atleast as many again. Took him to the vet the next day & she pulled 38 more out of him. Some went up his nose. Later on, they'd work out from between his toes to the back of his foot and from the roof of his mouth out the top of his nose, etc. Not real worried about infection, but gave him a course of antibiotics with the painkiller anyways. As you've seen from the pics that were posted, my experience was far from the worst it gets.

The population varies greatly by location. When Fishers weren't being trapped in WI, you saw very few porkies. They started trapping them again a few years back and they've been on the rise. In the Great Plains states, you find 'em on the ground more often than around here. I'll see a few porkies in trees on a 3day weekend trip for ruffed grouse and woodcock in NC WI. Thankfully, only a few on the ground in a season.
