Whippet x Irish Terrier

Hi, just wondered if this is a common cross? Everybody tends to use Whippet x Beddy for rabbits but just wondered what this cross would look like and proform like? Any body with experiance of these and any pics of one?

My old man told me years ago that in the 40's and 50's the Irish Terrier was the terrier of choice for putting into lurchers.There was an article and pics in EDRD about Irish Terrier lurchers,but ive no idea what number mag it was,im sure it was an old one (early 90's).Id hazard a guess that working Irish Terriers are few and far between,maybe thats why they fell out of favour??.

my mate bred some lakeland cross whippets out of his whippets that were awsome ratters really really good little dogs the lad told me he could have sold twice as maney

Interesting it was just a thought as you never see then advertised. Just that it is a good long legged terrier and somewhere there must be someone still breeding workers. Maybe worth a go if someone has a whippet that they want to breed from and fancies an experiment. Love the look of the Irish terrier. In one of Plummers books I'm shure that he states that they are a "mute" terrier. I find this hard to believe but it would have to be a benifit for any terrier cross running dog?

the problem with using Irish terrier in a lurcher mating as opposed to a wheaten or Bedlington is that Irish terriers are seldom used for work these days I have seen one in fifteen years that was genuinely working. If i was going to use a terrier for a whippet cross it would be a Bedlington that was working underground or a wheaten from proven tested working lines. I was having a chat with a mate the other day he said that he seen quite a few Irish terrier cross lurchers years ago and they were good daytime hare dogs and rabbit dogs but lacked when it came to foxes.

 

Yes I've no doubt that your right with regards to foxes. The combination would probably be too light. But I can't help but think that if you crossed a good working strain whippet with an Irish Terrier then this would help equal things up and bring a slightly hardier phisique and coat.
