Deker 3,478
Ok..I knock down plenty of rabbit, squirrel, deer, game birds etc during the year...AND eat plenty of it!!! Just in from digging my TINY veg patch, which often accompanies my free range meat, I am fortunate that I also get loads of "fertiliser" from the farms/stables which helps the veg patch..... Anyway...just curious how many of you grow your own veg as well...??? Also make my own Sloe Gin (great) and try the Elderberry Flower wine (not very good at that).... Find a few assorted "mushrooms" and had some great giant puffballs this year as well in the fields... Anyway..I suspect you are getting the idea.... HOW FAR DO YOU GO???? Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
I shoot a lot of Game during the winter, and get given a good bit of Venison from stalking friends. Rabbits are very few and far between down here so I don't happen to eat many, come to think of it I haven't seen a Squirrel for months now either But I enjoy eating what I shoot, Wild Duck and Woodcock are the favourites. I have a fairly decent size veg patch, well, big enough for me and a few others, through the year I grow early and main crop Pots as well as winter Pots for Christmas, Beans in spring and summer, Carrots I occasionally grow, Parsnips are a favourite along with Beetroot. Never had a great deal of success with Cabbages and Cauliflowers but I still shell out each year and put them there for the slugs!! And If I can be persuaded, then Tomatoes and Cucumbers in the Tiny green house which is falling to the ground almost but still, get out of it what I can. I made some Elderflower Champagne last year.................. There were sweet FA Sloes here this year, got lots of Rhubarb though, may try a wine with that, could be interesting!! Mushrooms? Ye must be joking, one I saw this year that was edible and the dog saw to it by stepping on it! But thats about my little venture at home here, depending on what is about and being shot, depends what I do, Pigeons in summer are good shooting along with good eating, but try getting me to eat one in March SS Quote Link to post
Fidgety 8
Why not pigeon in March SS?? Eat a fair bit of venison, pheasant, duck. The good lady of the house wont eat pigeon breast, but does enjoy the pate i make with it. Dont grow anything much yet, but our fields provide nice mushrooms, and blackberries. As soon as I put it in my mouth it was hurling back out again! Maybe it was my fault But I wont be eating another in a hurry! SS Quote Link to post

mattydski 560
Yep, got a small , small holding. Grow fruit and veg, more all the time as work permits. Poly tunnel coming this year Forage often, kids help and love it too. Mainly berries ect Was building a chicken run, until the misses put the reins on it, summit about heating and winter coming up being a priority??? Just putting the finishing touches on my 'butchery' in the work shop. Clean prep, fridge and freezer(out of her kitchen because of the moaning with a bit a blood splatter) Trying to buy another 1/2 acre-unsuccessfully at the present. Will continue with it, have done for years, driven by the cost of living... Quote Link to post

snapper5 0
I'm a keen gardener so produce enough veg from the garden to go with the game I shoot. Really good year this year for most things - just about to start on the sprouts, parsnips, leeks and still digging carrots. Purple sprouting a good size which will kick off in early spring. Picked all the remaining peppers from the greenhouse at the weekend, so the greenhouse is now empty and waiting for the onion seeds to go in on heated benches just after Christmas. Than it all starts over. We also have a large Bramley apple tree and three plum trees that I would quite like to see have a bad year in 2009 as if I see another apple or plum again, it'll be too soon! Its great to be able to provide complete meals for the whole family from the garden together with the venison, rabbits & pheasant I shoot. Must be the hunter/gatherer tendency coming out. Cheers all S Quote Link to post
