need help on lurcher

Recommended Posts

Its a real daft question on here. As everyone will put there own breed of lurcher...And quite right. Any lurcher will catch Rabbits but god knows what rabbit hears is...... You have had quotes already of collie/whippet/ beddlington. and saluki/whippet/grey. Then a bit of bull. Well there is nothing realy much left unless you start addingh more terriers, or big sight dogs... #

I have both the above mentioned and yes they are both shit hot on rabbit but i would say that, as no one calls there own dog shit do they! Its your own preference. If you wanted a ferret dog like you said, you cant beat a whippet. Yet it depends where you are, take a whippet on to the yorkshire dales or cumbrian fells in winter and it will cruel up and shiver! Then try and run a saluki on the bolder fells, and you dont have a chance..

It really is your preference, take a look at the land you will be runnig your dog on, a dog with collie in it and maybe a little terrier will run great on flat, be strong as f... on rocky ground and have a coat on it that you will be jelous of when out there in winter.... And as for feeding a ferret on bread and milk...lol... do you want it to get it skinny little head kicked in by every big buck it comes acrosss....

Make your own choice pal.... cheers Russ

Yes, they call it the barbaric days of looking after ferrets! When they got a smack in the face if they bit you. Bread and milk doesnt haveno where near enuff essentails that aferret needs to be strong and live well! Plus have a litter off. You say tho after asking what the problem is, that you give them rabbit as well, so you cant really comment on this, as they are getting meat in there diet as well, just what a carnivore should have!!

a 3/8 5/8 collie grey or a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie would be a good dog to start with. 3/8 5/8 if more foxs 3/4's if theres more hares but both make good rabbit and ferreting dogs. atb steve.

IMO - saluki grey x collie grey -

BUT as people have said , your just going to get people spouting off there own breed / type of lurchers , best thing is to find something that will be ideal for your terrain / game you plan to run , day/night work ,

read up on the many upon many of breeds / types - looking at what sort of work they are been used for , heights the usually make , and so on

good luck in what you decide ;)

i'd say regardless off the breed ,get a pup off parents that do ,what you want the pup to do.

seems a good place to start as any :clapper:

you have got to choose what you want ;you have to think to your self what you hunt most.If it;s rabbitts most of the time ;Iin my opinion would go for a well bred collie cross or bedi cross.
