SPAR 2
I have heard of people getting late birds. I know of a few who picked there's up at 12 weeks and have been no problem. I picked my female up at 22 weeks, swings from aroundabouts. Quote Link to post
scotlandforever 0
I pick up my First bird tomorrow a Male Harris at 16weeks the breeder says that he usually seels his birds at 12weeks but i asked if could hang on to mine for another 4 weeks just to try and prevent the screaming But Harris's are naturally vocal Jason Quote Link to post
SPAR 2
again swings from roundabouts Quote Link to post
sureshot360 1
again swings from roundabouts thanks for your feedback lads Quote Link to post
trappa 517
10 weeks is too early for me personally. Another con is tethering it down in the aviary whilst training as they are dodgy with frosts. Quote Link to post

trappa 517
15 weeks for me. 10 weeks is way to early for me, hell of a chance she will imprint slightly imo and you really dont want a screamer, unless you dont have neighbours of course. I had a screamer and i had to make a cup of tea for frontshift in the dark! the second the light in the kitchen came on she would start- not good mate! Quote Link to post
SPAR 2
Im not trying to have a argument but everyone I know who picks up a P/R Accipiter picks them up early, males about 9 weeks and females about 10- 10 1/2 weeks so I cant see much difference what bird it is but then again we could be getting on to another subject C/R vs P/R Quote Link to post
trappa 517
Gosses at ten weeks mate, yes, but a Harris, no way. If he picks it up at 10 weeks then i would put money that it will be a screamer, i had one like i said, at 13weeks i think and it was a massive pain. 15 weeks minimum for me, but we are all different. Plus, he will have problems tethering it down. If he gets it mid december and, lets say it takes him 4 weeks to fly it free( i dont know his history/skills ), it will need to be tethered when the heavy frosts of dec/jan hit. If the lad wants it he will get it and no-one will stop him but a 10 week harris in december has problems written all over it in my book. trappa Quote Link to post
SPAR 2
I couldn't agree more with the frosts ect, but then again there are alot of falconers that teather all year even through the moult all depents on shelter I suppose. Quote Link to post
D.A.Z 0
i am with trappa on this. you do not want a screamer thats a fact.the rest is just my opinion.personly i think by the time you get the harris going and like trappa i dont know your experience, you have got some very fit and wise stuff to fly at.also a short season for a birds first season. thanks daz Quote Link to post
sureshot360 1
thanks lads for your comments to answer some of your questions she will be my first bird but my brother has flown hh for a couple of years, can i freeloft her until late january she has plenty of room bang the grub into her without her seeing me man her up but dont fly her at anything until after the moult if i am talking crap let me know be gentle please Quote Link to post
SPAR 2
I think the best thing to do is to get it going ASAP as you will only be holding her back even if you are flying her for a month or two then start again after the moult. Quote Link to post
trappa 517
Agree with spar on that, its best to get them going, but i wouldnt think the breeder will give you her at 10 weeks mate to be honest. No breeder worth his salt will let a HH go to a newbie at 10 weeks, she WILL imprint and you will want rid within a year. Quote Link to post
