help dew claw ripped up and back

please help my basset hound just ripped her dew claw help

Dont panic!!!!! if its still bleeding hold a cold damp cloth on it and press hard for 5 mins or until it stops bleeding

cool boiled salt water and bathe it, GENTLY, so it doesnt start bleeding again.

tape it up with medical steri tape (if you dont have any you can use something else just for now but get some tomorrow

put one of your socks on its foot and tape it with electrical tape, not too tight though, just so it stays put.

repeat once daily, evening is best as it cleans it up from the day, at night the dog is not as active so it gets less dirty.

after 4/5 days do it every 2 days then after about another 4/6 days take it off.

keep the dog chilled, ie dont let it tear round the garden, just out for toilet and stretch legs on the lead.

perhaps a trip to the vets at some point in the future to get them off as they can be more of a problem once theyve done it once, not always though so thats something youll have to decide.

Losing a dew is not life theatning, but may need antibiotics to get the toe healed, one of my dogs just kept licking his until it went septic, only £12 for weeks worth of tablets.

f**k it mate best thing get some pliers and pull the claw out then clean it with warm salt water and put some antiseptic cream on the wound i use savlon. Then just keepp the wound clean the claw will grow back but if it happens frequently be aswell to have it off

If it's not broke all way back to pad ripping it out with pr of pliers probably going to get you a hand full of teeth marks. Sorry but this happened to my dog less than 2 weeks ago- he dont work by the way. It's worth £15 at the vet now rather than £30 in another week when it's infected.

I bathed it it salt water, put equine wound powder on it & vet wrap- then got it sorted. If your dogs working getting dew claws removed by vet may be better way forward for you.

My vet won't remove my lurchers dew claws, unless he injures them. Something about vet's trying to cut down on what they remove from working animals... I always thought that prevention was supposed to be better than cure.

That was the advice i received from my vets when this happened to my dog approxiamately 3 yrs ago. It worked no probs.

Dog was absolutly fine and made no difference to his running/working.

Strange that a vet won't remove dew claws, specially on an active working dog... I'd have expected working breed pups to have their dew claws nipped off when they were just a couple of days old - a very quick and simple procedure, removes the risk of injuries like Tom's dog suffered.

If I had a vet like that I wouldnt have him/her for long.Running dogs should have them removed in the nest.

sorry i did not get back earlier all has been sorted now :i had to buckle in to my wife demands and take her to the vet as i tried to remove and bandage but was getting a arm/hand full of teeth and the cost please do,nt ask but hey shes noes best
