Deker 3,478
I've just had an invite to a duck shoot in sundrenched Berkshire...a specialist, pre prepared, home grown here they are shoot them event. Not my normal bag but seemed rude to refuse as the day is normally £200 and bags of 30-40 are suggested (which I'm told is very good value). Anyway...I understand there will be plenty of birds but challenging ones too, some high apparently....getting the idea...I know nothing about this sort of duck shoot so, what sort of cartridge do you suggest please, and is my trusty 391 Semi acceptable or do I need to take the 686 or Silver Pigeon? Thanks Deker Edited October 29, 2008 by Deker
Fidgety 8
Never seen a semi auto on our shoot. Most of the guys use No 5 shot. Those ducks go bloody high, and very challenging. Not much help, but a start! Edited October 29, 2008 by Fidgety

Decker, these are difficult questions to answer, and if you find the debate stressful I am more than willing to sacrafice time that I could be spend painting the kichen and stand in for you on the day, however, if you do decide to take the cross on your own back then I would take either of your Beretta o/u's, whichever has the highest proof (i.e. is either magnum proofed). For a bag that size I imagine each gun may use about 20-30 carts ,max, assuming 6 guns. So buy 2 boxes of Hevishot duck or or hevishot classic doubles, that gives you 20 carts, and take along a box of standard steel 4's as backup. Alternatively a box of 25 2-3/4" EleyMaximum (34grm) of Alphamax (36grm) 4's or 5'sand then steel for backup Have a fabulous day

Thanks Deker hi deker , it sounds like a good day you got there ,i would take your O/U because it sounds like its a driving days duck shooting and they will be driving them off ponds to the guns , if its around and in woodland ,i would check with who ever gave you the invite and make sure that you are allowed to use steel shot the reason i say is . if you are shooting around and in woodlands that belong to the forrestry comission they do not alow you to use steel shot in some areas because it can penatrate the trees, then when they come to fell the trees the steel shot buggers the chains in the chainsaws . we are not allowed to use steel shot in the woods we shoot thats all .i would go for some bismuth a good load at that, if the ducks are going to be good like you say proberly 4s or 5s , heavy shot is good but not cheap . have a good day and let us know how you get on
