Caravan Monster 323
Few months back, I took on a young jill that was getting mauled by the other ferrets in its owner' s court setup, with the plan of using it to work with my veteran lurcher on the little hedgerow warrens that are common on my permission. I' ve took it quite slowly, first getting the ferret back to good health, then slowly and carefully introducing both animals. The dog has been good as gold- she is easy to stock break to anything, trouble is the ferret is a right fecker for chasing feet, both human and animal. This means that the ferret is forever chasing the dog around, and if she stands still, the ferret will try and climb up her legs, scratching away. Obviously things can' t go on like this, because sooner or later, the dog will loose her temper and deal with the ferret. So, the dog training question is how do I go about teaching the dog to stay a good distance away from the ferret? Not really an away/ stay, I' d rather the dog can move around as she sees fit, just keeping out of the way of the ferret so it doesn' t bother her. I know it will be a bit different when they are both concentrating on rabbits, but want to get the relationship between both animals more reliable before working them together. Any ideas? MikeTheDog 153
So, the dog training question is how do I go about teaching the dog to stay a good distance away from the ferret? You won't need to train the dog to stay away from the ferret!..
Caravan Monster 323
You won't need to train the dog to stay away from the ferret!.. That' s what I thought Mike. The dog is a fairly sensible sort and has the sense to keep away from the various forms of annoying farmyard livestock she is familiar with, but she seems to hang around me when the ferret is about. Maybe its because I' m paying attention to what the ferret is up to? Perhaps I' m overthinking it, and should just get on with it and hope they will be OK when ferret' s mind is on hunting rabbits rather than being a tw@t.
