SS aint lost it!!

Recommended Posts

Well after many complaints from my sidekick via abusive PM and abusive Phone calls :D

I was persuaded to get out for a mooch with the Lamp and Rifle.

Been quite a while since I fired a rifle at anything, since I came back from Ireland infact, that it was time to get out again, and the rifle was zero'd on Sunday.

I spoke to a landowner today, one which I shoot for, and he said a few of his poultry were being taken every night, been going on for a week or so. OK, perfect excuse to get out.

It is damn cold out there tonight, has been all day, I thought I would leave it a bit later and then get out.

After chatting for a bit, I went out about 9:45 and headed off, fully kitted up with my thermals, lamp, gun, ammo, tweeds the lot, down to the farm.

Only a small farm this, about 30 acres or so, but it gives the impression of being a 30 acre glade in a forest, surrounded on all sides by trees.

I had planned to sit in the car looking over all these fields and call and shoot from there, but when I arrived, I pulled in through the gate and went to drive down to the gate which enters the field. NO Fecking way I was driving through Mud 6 inches deep!!!!

So I parked up on the "driest" spot (which is hard to come by here at the moment) and walked it instead.

Now this lane to the fields is full of mud and puddles, which is better to walk on mud or puddles if you want to be quiet?

Anyway, off I squelched!

Lamp in one hand, rifle over the arm.

Not my ideal shooting situation!!! I hate lamping and shooting, makes me miss all too often, but I had no choice.

I squelched on down the lane, and thought, no damn fox is gonna be here with this racket!!

Got to the gate which enters the field, the fields here drop away from you not too steeply but still a good downward view.

About thirty yards in front there is a mounded drainage ditch.

I stood in the gateway, I could see the estuary glistening in the moonlight (sounds very romantic doesn't it!!) and I shone the lamp over the fields, right to left. Eyes! :ninja: Sheep :(

Flashed around the field further, and further down into the valley towards the tree line at the bottom of the field.

I came into line with the ditch again, and Eyes!!! :ninja: :ninja:

Fox!! :)

He ran a few yards and..................... the feckin lamp went off! :censored: :censored: I twiddled the leads a bit and it came back on thankfully!!

I had it back on him and the rifle on the post in front of me before you could say "flash".

I followed him in scope, he ran a bit further, and then stopped out in the field...........................

Bad Idea!!

Boooooooooooom!!! Pop!!! and a POP of giant proportions bounding off the trees!!

Stood up from behind the rifle, lamped the area, I could see him there in the open, not a move from him.

About 120 yards out, I walked down the field, to inspect. Left the rifle and lamp where is was and got out my little LED torch, its a lifesaver of a thing!!

Got to him there, and his tongue was hanging out and not a quivver, the Ballistic tip done it's job!

He was one big 'ol Dog! I picked him up by the front leg to drag him to the top of the field, By heck there was a weight!! I think this is the one causing hassle, well fed for sure.

Pleased as punch, and by the size of this farm, and the noise from shot, I didn't think I would see anymore there tonight, so dragged foxy and the equipment back to the car and hun the fox up on the fence for the farmer to see tomorrow and hopefully have a smile on his face.

God, good to be back out folks!! And the .222 as well as SS aint lost it just yet

Well done on foxy, nice to get back out at it isn't it? (leading question...).

I lost it a long while ago you're right.......................... :tongue2:

Leading question......

Yeah, it was great to be back out with the rifle, so many things happening of late and just not enough time. By the time you think about it, I was way too tired!

I think my Rifle is OK with me shooting it John, not sure yours took such a disliking to me
