SeanEdgo 29
hiya all, i no that deerhound x greyhound is a popular cross and would think that they make an exellent coursing, foxing dog. however how do they fair on small game like rabbits. i would think that their turning ability is limited and there accelleration is poor as they are a very large dog. Do they lamp well??? what are your opinions/experiences with these dogs?? thanks sean Quote Link to post

Guest Keeps
I have heard many people complain about a deer x's rabbiting abilities but can't say Ive really experienced any problems with the first X that I have, maybe Ive been lucky. She's good on the lamp and doesnt miss many, can turn well, and isnt a great deal different to the young beardie x we have when it comes to lamping; we do lamp largish fields giving her the chance to show her full ability. She does tend to be a little hard mouthed though I have taken her ferreting, and even though she is on the large side for it (29") she took it all in her stride. She was a little old to take ferreting for the first time, and isnt really one to stand around much. One thing I cant knock her for is that she is very keen and puts her heart and soul into whatever she does No, they dont have the immediate speed that a small rabbiting dog would have, though they do have more stamina & they arent everyones cup of tea but I guess its all down to personal preference, I really like them If you want a dog solely for rabbiting then they probably arent for you. Mik on here is one to ask about them Quote Link to post
Guest Nightwalker
I have had a number of deerhound cross lurchers and have one at the moment, mine catch ALL game well and I have had deerhound crosses that have killed in excess of 40 rabbits single handed in one night. If rabbiting is all you do then they are probably not the best dog for you, but many do make very good allrounders and excel on the largest game Quote Link to post

DiStuRBeD 0
my mate has a pure deer in australia, he is about 14months old or there abouts, takes a while to wind up but once he does man is it a sight, watching him just fly, they are a magical dog to watch run ive got a stag, which is primarily deer x grey, with a bit of wolf in it, but the line goes back quite a bit, youd be looking way back, maybe 20 years or more to find a pure dog... they had new stag blood put in them about 16 years ago so the stag then could of had pure not far back but no one knows if its the dog you like then get it, might not be the best, definately wont be the worst Quote Link to post
