andybentley 0
Hello All, First of all thanks to to Ian for keeping the site running I have a ¾ Bedlington ¼ Greyhound (Onyx, Nyx for short), she is now almost 8 month old, below are some photos from the day I picked her up (10wk old) to present. She is my first Lurcher so all advice is welcome, I have spent the last 8months on this forum sifting through pages of posts and trying to get a good idea for the do’s and don’ts which is one of the good things about THL. I’m not totally new to hunting but coursing with dogs I am. One of the main topics that seems to get many varied answers is when to start a dog off!! I have been told many different ages and methods for different dogs, it soon becomes apparent the majority advise to obedience train for 9mnth and if ready, (which I have read you’ll just know the time!) to then try some easy slips on rabbits. This is one of the main reasons for my post as something to do while waiting for the time, as I’m sure many people have started dogs off too early, but I’m trying my best not to!! Nyx at 10 weeks the first day out 12.5 weeks trying my best to pump the snap down : 14 weeks Nyx and Holly 2yr ESS 16.5 weeks still pumping the snap down 5 months getting better at wrestling the spaniel! 6 months Nyx out for a walk with my mates dog Bubs 3/8 Bull x 5/8 greyhound 2yrs old approx 7 months Walking, Training 8 months More walking and more training. andybentley 0
stunning lookin bitch, have you started her yet?? I have had her out with the lamp just to see if she showed intrest, she seems to look everywhere but down the lamp, i didn't expect anything else really, I have been trying to find some good daytime rabbits for her but our area doesn't hold many!! Thinking about getting her out on the lamp, just concerned she'll chase and not know mentally what to do. What do you think? Quote Link to post

bill88 6
Nice looking dog mate, are you sure there isnt a bit of bull in her somewhere?? Her head looks slightly bully in the last pic.As for starting her id just keep excercising her and working on her obedience.I wouldn't slip her on anything till she was 12 months plus.I started taking my beddiexwhippet ferreting at 6 months, but she was only allowed to chase the odd bolter, and this will be her first year doing any lamping (shes now 19 months old) smaller dogs seem to mature quicker than bigger dogs, and running them too soon is asking for trouble.Just let her be a puppy, holding her back will do far more good than harm. All the best with her,i hope she does you proud,Bill My wee rabbit catcher. Hannah4181 260
Looks like a lovely dog. My beddyxwhippett pup is coming up 8 months and literally in the last week, it's like he's realised what he's meant to do. Suddenly very interested in rabbits and whilst walking today he took off after 1, but lost it in thick cover. I'm not sure how to proceed with him now, i haven't given him any "lurcher training" in terms of working him. He is very obedient and his recall is excellent. I now don't know wether to leave him and let him discover himself whilst out on daily walks, or try to encourage somehow? He does get worked on a flirt stick like all my dogs, and he'll go nuts for that and certainly seems to have the drive there. As the pictures show!!! Naughty puppy shredding a dead pigeon!
