long net poles

hi all i recently swap a rifle for some nets and was wondering the same thing so iv scouted about and found that

a plant stake is good thay start at 3ft upwards .there solid metal poles that have flex in them coverd in green plastic .there not heavey thay even have a moulded bit on top for ur line too and at 56p there a bargin even if thay ware to break.m

Are you sure they are solid ? they sound like the ones i got for the garden, hollow metal covered in green plastic, and they snap and bend easy.

nah thay ware solid as i bent one to see how felible it was there was some that ware just like tubes.m

I went to B&Q yesterday and bought some 17mm dowel 8 ft long ( gutted when i went to the till ) i hate buying thing , i will be cutting them up to around about 800mm long and putting a slight point on one end, the top i was going to come down 70mm and drill a 6mm hole through it and i was going put some wire through and tie it top a rubber band ( from a camping shop that you use with the peg and a tent ) the pass it through the net and hook it over the end of the pole and slide it down to the wire to stop the net falling off

 

i will post a photo soon so you no what i mean, sounds hard but will be easy and cheap.....

Like Paul I to have used dowle for the last 20 years, many lads have said not to use it as it can snap, in all this time I have never had dowle snap on me, it is light cheap and you can get hold of it any where, I have used quick set systems with carbonfiber poles like most folk they are very good and very strong but you cant go to your local diy srore and just pick them up, the reason I first used dowle and it was along time before the basket systems became popular is that I have a joiners shop and have always had dowle laying about, Im going to rig up a basket system with dowle pole this next week, as I say I have used these pole for many years on traditional long nets with no problems so dont see there being any with the basket system, I will be fixing the net with castration rings to the dowles

i stand corrected as there solid plastic not metal and thay dont have the bit on the top but im sure thay will do

i used some plastic coated sticks from homebase think they was 50p each and similar as brought ones

as everyone is telling you hazel is the best thing to use a good wood when its dried out too any other pegs use elder ( for ie purse nets etc)

Ive always used bamboos for longnet pegs. get 10x5foot medium thickness bamboos from garden centre. Use fine hacksaw to cut in half, this gives 20 pegs of 30ins each. My pegs are 26inch. My quiver is the bottom 24 inches of an old gunslip which is already reinforced, but I usually push a rag in the bottom for extra padding. Add a bit of string so it can go over your shoulder, lasts for years. Im a newbie so this might have been discussed before but Im sure I would rather carry 20 bamboos than 20 fencing stakes.

They seem to work. just gotta be bit careful not to be too brutal with em but same with everything bar the fiberglass expensive ones. also the lil notches are handy if you want to fix the net to them.
