Double muscled whippets

Recommended Posts

i would imagine the amount of lactic produced would be phenominal ... the amount of muscle carried would make them very prone to cramping up ... and all the agility needed for a days work twisting and turning on a rabbit would be lost due to the sheer bulk of muscle ... all in all pretty fecking useless unless you own a freak show .............

Tend to find a "bully" whippet cannot stick the pace and is slower than the half/half whippets. There have been a few in the racing and for the majority 150yds is just too far for them and they will drop off behind at about 80-100yds. Bully's can also tend to be more susceptable to cramps, the same amount of blood as a non-bully trying to carry the same amount of oxygen around two or three times more muscle cells.

Note: Not to be confused with Bull x Ghd or Bull x Whippet.

thats probably why i could only find one bully whippet that was used in racing, all the others were half and half! you make alot of sense mate, welcome to the forum :clapper:

this is a whippet with one copie of the double muscle gene (the middle row downwards)the normal whippets are the row going down the left and the double muscled 'bully' whippets are the last row going down

the ones in the middle row look real nice , hopefully i will achieve something similar by x breeding my bull x bitch with a whippet from good breed stock :clapper:

 Well I quite like that muscular black gal.. :toast:

I find the modern 'scientific' conclusions regarding this phenomenon to be most interesting :hmm:

And whilst I don't really have the headpiece to comprehend such heady data,.I do know a wee bit about 'Bully' whippets.. And one should not confuse the nomenticlure (which refers to the 'hard blood' inclusion that has gone towards the creation of today's modern specialist racing whippet),.to that of a straight cross twixt a pure Whippet and a Staff (or some other kind of bull dog  )....to create a lurcher...

I've been around 'Non-Pedigree whippets for several years,..although my passion for rabbit hunting has never allowed me to become part of the racing scene..The facts being,..I could never keep my track dogs solely confined to the track,..and predictably they in-cured injuries undertaking a task for which that had not been originally created...

I saw my first Bully type whippets many decades ago ...

They were from a union between Rch Fly By and Baby Jane...(both 'Bilko bred' critters..) :notworthy:

Fabulous pups,.powerhouses,..maybe ideal for a rabbiting man,.but,..sadly a wee bit too bully to be successful on the race track. One of the bitch pups was BORN looking like a power lifter...

I personaly found her immensely attractive,..but,.as others have so rightly said,..she would often cramp up and suffer terribly after only a smidgen of light racing..

There have been quite a few similar specimens,.and most serious whippeteers can easily recognise such a potential 'lump' of a whelp in their litters of pups,..and anything that appears to be too bull like will usually be found a pet home.

Now,.this 'problem' does not seem to affect the straight half crosses with Greyhound and whippets that have been hybridised with Bull bloods,..it seems to be something that is way back in the linage of the genuine race dogs ?

That being said,.I have always been wary of allowing heavily muscled running dogs to become cold after a days work or a hard night on the lamp,..and I have never fought shy of 'rugging up' one of my canine athletes..

An interesting subject,.many thanks to the original poster for raising it.. :clapper:

All the best,.CHALKWARREN.. :drink:

I can remeber when i first saw one of these whippets years ago it was in a litter bred from a very good dog called Mo Evil it was called Vienna the lad kept it and raced it a the club we thought it must have been a throw back to some bull blood it looked very stiff when it ran as if it didnt have full movement and wasen't very fast.

you should have kept it and crossed it back to a pure 'wild type' you would have got all pups half and half like the middle row going down on the previous pic.

Spot on there Nobby :notworthy:

Mo-Evil was a good old sort,..and I've had a lurcher bitch bred out of Mobek his son..

Yeah,.they were a tad on the bully side,.but as I say,..I don't think it affects a dog too much when out-crossed to a miscellaneous lurcher type,.as opposed to keeping the breeding 'tight' by going Champion speedster to Champion,.. as the purest race boys frequently do...

My own Fat Whippet has a bully look about her,.and she come down via Supreme Racing Champion 'Country Music',..and he was quite a racy built kind of dog..Whatever,..I would still always favour a nice muscular dog over a more slimmer version...

Mostly because,.other than when out on a weekend 'jolly (recreational ferreting).. I mostly work wooded areas and I definitly find that a more rounded,.well covered worker seems to 'bounce better'...

All the best,Nobby,...cheers,.CHALKWARREN... :drink:
