I may be out of order here

but I'm genuinely surprised that this section is still running. Firstly to Ian and all the crew who oversee the site, you can't be everywhere 24/7 and this is no way a dig at you guys, but I do feel that this section was more like "chat" than any other on here and I left here at the beginning of this year for this very reason. I found I could no longer take it seriously and even after returning have found it difficult to contribute. The amount of duplicate threads was unreal, i.e.

.177 or .22?

which is the best PCP?

which is the quietest PCP?

How do I make my rifle more powerful? (good question to be asking in the true light of day :icon_eek::wallbash: )

I've got the gun, now what can I kill?

Which is the best rifle for killing rabbits?

etc etc etc

most of the new members to this section of late just could not be bothered to look at what had been discussed at length in the passed and everything of relevance was "pinned/sticky" :wallbash:

It was usually on one of these threads that the bickering etc would start, so with that in mind, please, please, please guys do your homework by reading the wealth of knowledge/experience on offer here posted by folk who have been there and done it before even posting unnecessary drivvle that Ian and the mods end up having to sort out and it is up to us all to point this out to the members who are unaware instead of taking the piss or ignoring them :drink:

There's some truth to what you say Al, but is it really that different to "What's the best dog for rabbits? or "Show us your bull cross"?

In the main the posts are hunting related, although there are some general (and repeated) threads/questions as you say.

Totally agree with the last paragraph though :victory:

i do agree there seems to be alot of duplicate questions asked on here but there is only so many questions that you can ask about our sport and the same with any sport .

maybe we need to sort some kind of tutoial / tips section where some of use experianced airgunners can offer our expert knowledge

and maybe get some reviews of our guns going so it would help newbies with there first purchase from people who actualy use these these guns on a regular basis ?

New members will ask the same questions we all asked when we were new. It's exciting to find a place like this and immerse yourself in the info. I think, it's good to keep the cool over it, to direct them to relevent pinned topics and ask them to use the search function. It's also useful and good to try to directly help them out with your own knowledge. The main thing is not to let it get under your skin ;) It's a bit like that saying about careers, that you should be nice to the people on the way up, as you never know when you'll need them on the way back down ;)

New people to the fraternity will always ask the same questions we asked when we started, as boring as it is, if they are new to forums as I am, then finding past posts is not that easy, I've been hunting one thing or another since I was 8, but only joined my first forum when I was 46. Joined this forum this month.

I guess I'm forgetting that not all members come from a history of hunting and shooting passed down within their families generation after generation. There has always been a weapon of some description, within easy access for us to get out and sort whatever was after our livestock. There was a "gunsmith" to sort us out then and there was no way he would be up for any "sales targets", if he thought anyone wasn't the right sort he just wouldn't entertain them. For me these days it's the dogs and air rifles, BUT the point I am trying to make is this, what I know was not found via the information super highway and there was no way I could just walk into a "Sports" shop and buy air rifles that are potentially lethal in the wrong hands.

These days the so called "dealers" are exactly that, just dealers, OK it's not drugs, but it is a commodity that will make them a couple of bucks and as soon as the customer is through the door they are history, "How long does the warranty run for?", probably about as long as it takes for them to hand over the dosh.

So OK, I've got the very latest state of the art air rifle, but just what the hell can I do with it? How many "set ups" have you seen for sale with the seller suffering a huge financial loss? The basics are not provided at "point of sale"/dealers so here I am nearly £1500's worth of kit what the feck do I do next?, I know I'll get on a hunting site and go from there.

This is fine if the new member can have a look and find what they need to know without making a complete prat of themselves and getting torn to shreds by the folk who can't be arsed with "newbies", feck I hate that term!!!!!!

All members need to be aware that any fecker can just waltz into a dealer and pick up an air rifle and land all the crap in creation in this sites lap, that's just the way it is, chances are, when they find out they can't walk around the town centre or the car park at Tesco's with their new kit they'll be long gone anyway.

Let's get real and even if it's only pointing them towards a link regarding "airgun law", why not do this rather than belittle them :drink:

nuff said, if your new, look in the search box, chances are that your question has be asked 1000 times before you evan knew about THL.

I understand what you're saying mate but I don't recon it's fair. There's a saying 'If you don't ask you'll never know'.

I welcome anyone interested in our sport, and I'm happy to show them the 'ropes'

Newcomers may just need to talk to us, ask for our help, or just need to feel welcomed. Hitting the search facility may get a newcomer some answers, but it won’t get them involved.

I say to any newcomer, ask away. Most of us will be glad to help

Rob

hiyu, it's the same on most forums, i think most newbies just get flustered and ask it, most the forums i've been on have a search function, but with titles like 'have you seen this' or 'look at what i found' you'd need to be psychick.. in wich case you wouldnt need to ask

i think airgunning can be a 'chatty' thing in general, i've come accros and shot with rimmy and center guys (rairly) and they aint that chatty at all.. get together with a few airgun guys it's worse than a old womand stoneing sesion..

Some people just aren't that good at sussing out info, Al, and it's usual in forums for people to ignore the 'stickies', even though there's a varied and useful selection on this bit of the forum.

People with experience often forget what it's like to be a clueless newbie. You get just the same in the ferret section.
