Airgun for Rabbits

Whatever rifle you get just make sure it's powerfull enough to do the job at hand and you don't try and shoot beyond it's capability...but I'm sure you know that, as for a nice cheap hunter why not try and get hold of a BSA Lightning there are always a few on hear and reasonably priced too.

Good luck.

Hello.

I'm looking to get an air rifle to take care of a rabbit problem I'm suffering.

The problem is, I have no idea which air rifle is appropriate, I don't have any license of any kind for a fire arm. I'm in England.

The rifle must be able to easily kill a rabbit(cleanly).

I just need the cheapest rifle that can easily kill rabbits!

Thank you!

Glass.

Hi Glass,

For the value of interest, in which area of England are you situated? :)

Regards,

Grim.

Just splash out and get a Theoben S-TYPE :D it will knock spots off all the above suggestions ;)

He speaks the truth :clapper: however, 1k is a lot to pull out to sort a few bunnies if you have no real interest in airguns, a nice Hw95k with a decent 4x40 scope, plenty of practise, ie, 8 out of 10 shots inside a 5p piece size circle at 25yds sitting/kneeling position will sort the problem soon enough.

Failing that a second hand pcp for about 350 incl scope will do it in no time :D

Fellas... re-read some of these posts... if you were a non-shooter looking for advice would you find them helpful or really f*****g confusing.

We're the only people that talk about chronographs and ft/lbs... we're the nerds that talk to other nerds in our purpose built nerdery...

This guy has come in for some tips and we've gone overboard with the technical jargon... is it any surprise he hasn't been back in? :icon_redface:

I let this topic die some time ago.

But am now back looking into a gun for rabbits.

How much is the cheapest I could get an air riffel for to kill them off?

It needs to be very clean kills, so slighly more power than nessary would be an advantage.

Also....

Where should you be shooting them to get a clean kill? lungs behind front legs, or head?

Head shots are preferable, but heart/lungs will do the trick :)

I have a very cheap SMK Mod19, people slate them because they are chinese.

I took it out for a hunt (one of 5 trips so far) and bopped a bunny in the head at about 20ish yards and pellet dropped it clean exiting the other side and going gawd knows where, heres a link to it

Rifle last time I had it chronographed was doing a pleasant 10.5 ft/lbs so easily despatches bunnies out to 35+yards if target hit in head.

But for clarity if you can hit just below the ear and behind the eye is an ideal shot.

Practice on paper first, then practice some more, when you think your good enough practice some more then go get em ;)

Head shots, get them between the eye and the ears and then they drop. As far as the gun goes, have a look in the for sale section on here and you will find something.

Would reckon that the majoirty of non FAC air rifles would be more than capable of despatching bunnies if the trigger man is up to the job, it only takes 4.5lb ;)

I'd be a bit careful of the (new) cheaper ones, I had a Crosman Quest (£149 inc. scope) that was chrono'd at a consistent 14.4lb.

Got myself an HW95K now (rifle only £275) that chrono's at 11.4 and is a MUCH nicer rifle in every way.

dont start telling people that it only takes 4.5lb to kill a rabbit

maybe this is true at 5 yards

anyone hunting with a rifle should be looking at close to the 12ft/lb as they can get

as said head shots behind the eye,and you can pick up old weirauch guns like 80, 77k for about 100-120 quid in good nick these will drop rabbits no problem go for the 22 and the best of luck mate.

From the post, it seems he is trying to demonstrate that it only takes 4.5 ft/lbs of energy for a pellet to penetrate far enough to kill, not the muzzle energy of the gun in question. By the time a 12 ft/lb gun has fired a 14gr pellet to 35 yards, it may well only retain 4.5-5 ft'lbs of energy.
