borderboy 80
I've just read terrierbitchs thread... ..... and it sparked me into asking a question i've been wondering for a while... Ive got a 4/5 year old border bitch, which i'd love to have a pup out of, shes a spot on and very handy to have around... Theres only one problem... I wont be able to have a litter for a couple more years though, because i cant keep another terrier at the moment... whats the latest you can breed from a terrier without risking her health...? Thanks Charlie
Dawn B 212
My friend left her Border till she was 4 and she had one huge pup, dead, she mated her 12mths later and she had 3 live pups, 2 died. I think you are pushing it at the age she is for a first time, perhaps buy one in from similar breeding when the time is right?

I feared that it was probably too late ... id hate to risk my bitches health, for the sake of getting myself a pup... She has a sister born just recently ... who im hoping will be given a chance to show her worth, maybe thats where i'll have to source a young'un in a couple of years...!? Surely in working dog circles theres a hell of alot of bitches not bred till they're 4 or more who produce good litters....??
Back Stabbath 1
Four is not too old to breed! You're supposed to wait until a bitch is three before you breed her for the first time! Depending on the size, breed and health of the dog, breeding should be stopped anywhere from 6 (great dane type dogs) to about 8 (small dogs, terriers cockers). You'll be grand breeding her mate, just make sure you give her the best food (raw meat, bones, some veg) before mating for a few weeks to get her into condition, throughout pregnancy and throughout lactation. Good luck!
Guest xxtemicxx
hi im new but i have bred borders and you get more complications with them breeding over for and i would not breed past 6years any way for the health of your dog listen to dawn b he knows

Good luck! Hi Back Stabbath,I actually replied to your post on this subject before THL crashed where you also said a bitch should be three before being bred from and a dog should be two. Didn't see your reply (if any). If your talking of waiting till a dog has proven it's worth breeding from with regards to working ability then I definately agree with you, but I don't think you are or why the difference between dog and bitch?.So I'll ask again what do you base your facts on? Guest lurcherboy2008
4/5 is prime time pal, a terrier is not proven untill around 3/4 years of age. ill be breeding my lurcher bitch when she comes on heat and shell be 5 in september, im only breeding her due to recently loosing a pup 4/5 year old definetly isnt too old pal some people are breeding out of bitches at 8/9 year old but obviously only if they worth breeding from, alot of people work a dog hard for about 6/7 years then breed from them, if you ask me thats the way to do it, give it a go mate definetly not too late!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck! I didnt say 4yrs was too old!! I said it would be "pushing it" for a first litter now but Borderbody doesnt want "now" anyway he wants to wait another couple of years!! So IMO 6/7 years is MUCH too old for a first litter!
borderboy 80
some points worth thinking about... It might never happen... but i would like to have the option, i've alway wanted to put a decent lakeland over her, maybe when its closer to the time she'll make the decision, If shes fit healthy and sound, perhaps i'll go for it... perhaps i'll find something more suitable... perhaps.... perhaps... Its all just sometihing to be thinking about...
