...so do the anal glands empty into the rectum, or the outside when squeezed?

They empty outside. When they are operating normally, the secretions from the glands coat the feces as the dog passes it. To check if the glands are full, feel at about four o'clock and eight o'clock on the outside of the anus. They'll feel like grapes or cysts. You can empty them pretty easily by putting a paper towel over the whole butt and squeezing inward and upward from the outsides of the glands. MAKE SURE YOU COVER THE WHOLE AREA WITH THE TOWEL. Depending on how full the glands are they can empty out like a fire hose and squirt a long distance. Keep your face out of the line of fire and if you get it on your clothes, just throw them away. You will never get the stink out.

Assuming anal glands are the problem, have a look at diet too, particularly if the problem re- occurs. Some dogs need to be sh@tting bricks to empty the glands naturally. Chicken carcass works well. I expect one of the hardcore BARF folk will be along to advise on principles of feeding bones and raw to pups.

I see the two possible cause's have already been covered. As already mentioned RAW chicken wings and carcass will make your dog shit bricks, this will almost certainly empty the anal glands without the need for sQueezing  My dogs get fed Chicken wings most days ,and never seem to have trouble with "bum skating" Other possible cause is worms, and a dose of Drontal should sort this out easily.Obvious to most, but some people still don't know,NEVER FEED COOKED BONES!!
