thehunter69 1
i was just looking at my ferret claws the other day and thought there where getting slightly long and thought of a way i might be able to get them alittle smaller, would to ok to put a small square about 18'' x 18'' of roofers felt in my cage so as the ferrets can scrat away or will it be a waste of time and will the black tar get stuck in the little feet/claws....cheers for any replys. Coatesy900 0
All in all a concrete slab does the trick fine. If you want them smaller, clip them, as wearing them down takes ages. Edited October 24, 2008 by Coatesy900 Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Just clip them, i do mine occasionally, don't put felt or sandpaper down, the may scratch it and get sores or raw pads..... Quote Link to post
moley 115
iv got woodun runways and mines claws are usually pretty clipped why do you need short claws on a ferrets feet ? the claws are tools , just like thier teeth Quote Link to post

bigphil 0
As i found today lol. My hand is a mesh just after a couple of hours ferreting. Talk about fidgety, i think they just wanted to get stuck in rather than be handled. Quote Link to post
The one 8,463
If your worried id clip them during the summer but i wouldn't be inclinded to clip them in the working season. Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
I just do my fezzer's when I think they need doing, dont want them walking around with their toe's forced back because of claws, think once you have done it a few times they seem to like it? Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
iv always thaght with longer claws they keep held on to the rabbit and so kill it better meaning you dig more shorter claws have less grip and so cant hang on to them aswell? Mind get confused and generally kill the rabbit with their teeth Commonsense will tell you when the claws require trimming. Quote Link to post

Mine use there claws for scraping the rabbit's are in a dead end and working them keeps there claws down but i dont know about holding on to the rabbit with them Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
The claws on a wild animal, constantly on the move and working hard for a living are short, look at any mink or stoats. The ferret can still grab its prey with short claws, but if they are left long it looks like there toes are being bent out of line and backwards. I've had one of mine with a broken claw cause it was left too long, it tried to dig around a rabbit in a rocky tube, didn't really bother it though, it grew out and was clipped a week or so afterwards. will.f11 24
I think that a ferret needs his claws whilst working. They dont need to be soo long they are painfull for the fert but long enough for them to encourage a rabbit to bolt but thats just my opinion Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Another way is stick them under an upturned bucket for 5 mins on a flag floor with a brick on the bucket. The claws are usually scratched off in no time with them trying to get out! Quote Link to post
victor 10
nail clippers and 1 minute of spare time is all you'll need Quote Link to post
