hello lads/ladies, last night was lamping on some new permission and shone the lamp in the river which flows through, seen a cracking fish think it was a salmon, a good 4 or 5 lbs. i would love to have a go at salmon fishing but i was wondering how much a salmon license is and where i can get 1? iv just lost my job and havent got a great deal of cash so if they are silly prices ill be giving it a miss until another time, also whens the best time to go for salmon in the rivers and is night fishing for them illegal? if i go i would like to do a bit of lamping then go straight fishing so a bit of night fishing and lamping should make a great night if all went well, just wondering what the best bait is? i know spinner and fly can be deadly but is there anything else? worms etc? any info would be great???

You can get the licence from the Post Office. If money is tight, you can get a day licence (list below). As for what bait, I would say worm would be best. Spinners need light to be affective and fly fishing in the dark wouldn't be that easy.

Salmon and Sea Trout:

Full £68.00

Adult concession £45.00

Disabled concession £45.00

Junior concession £5.00

Eight day £22.00

One day £7.50

Heres the link if you need anymore info about licences

No you wouldnt be able to night fish for them anywhere. Unless you get right in with the land owner. Then he would have to be a real good friend... And on a known slamoln river.... depending on which part of the country you live, it will be to dear for you to even buy a day ticket. Guys pay up to 3grand to fish salmon rivers for the season, and up to 100quid a day "some end up with nothing all year"!! So a day ticket would nt surfice.... Once they have entered the river they become the hardest fish in water to catch... Its not just a case of casting out. They lose there appitite once in fresh water as they are there to spawn. You have to wind them up into taking your lure.. Which can be a frustrating process. I surgest just go for something a little cheaper and no where near as difficult... cheers Russ.

Mooching around on new legal permission land is one thing, guddling salmon of the river is another kettle of fish

I mean you risk of losing your permission, the land owner might not have the rights to the river so therefore you risk your own neck, but if you do it dont use a bright lamp
